  • Whiteboarding & Algorithms Workshop - Wednesday Edition (self-directed, drop-in)

Because jobhunting and preparing for job interviews by yourself sucks. It's better to do it with a community! Come to Noisebridge and practice whiteboarding, algorithms, and other interviewing techniques together with others!! =D (This is also a support group for job-hunters.) This event will be in the Hackitorium, and will be self-organized / self-directed!! ^_^ All experience levels are welcome. (Arrive any time between the start & finish times, at your own convenience. And leave whenever you want. There's no strict start & end time.) (For newcomers, this is how you get in: to go inside, please ring the doorbell at the gate, then go to the 3rd floor.) This workshop was inspired by "Whiteboarding Wednesdays" at Dev Bootcamp. ~~~~~~~~~~ My Personal Opinion About Whiteboarding Interviews: https://twitter.com/ThePracticalDev/status/716997357624287232/photo/1 https://twitter.com/mirror2mask/status/790779116395962368 https://medium.freecodecamp.org/why-is-hiring-broken-it-starts-at-the-whiteboard-34b088e5a5db But unfortunately, this is the world that we live in. ~~~~~~~~~~ My personal tips to get good at interviews: There are actually 2 different skills being tested in interviews, especially whiteboarding interviews. The first skill is public speaking / communication skills, and the second skill is technical proficiency. Both of these skills need to be practiced in tandem, and are equally important. These are what you need to do: 1) Practice public speaking / communication skills - Get used to speaking in front of others and narrating your thoughts. Going to whiteboaring interview practice gets you used to talking in front of other people, so instead of associating the emotions of nervousness and anxiousness with public speaking, you associate public speaking with familiarity. 2) Know your stuff - Be very comfortable and familiar with your skills, because it's hard enough to do public speaking, while trying to remember the technical parts. - Good way to get better at programming is to work on something you want to make, or work on something that you really care about. Example, I love videogames, and I want to make videogames, so that's how I got better at programming. ~~~~~~~~~~ List Of Resources: ~~~~~~~~~~ https://gitlab.com/BerniceChua/Whiteboarding_And_Algorithms_Workshop_-_Wednesday_Edition#whiteboarding-and-algorithms-workshop-wednesday-edition ~~~~~~~~~~ If you want more community-oriented events and other cool stuff like this, please donate to Noisebridge: https://donate.noisebridge.net/projects/Forever_Home_t8dKTgrb2p or https://www.patreon.com/noisebridge ~~~~~~~~~ Join the community! ^_^ https://www.discord.gg/JnfB58Z

  • Noisebridge Sewing Project Night

    Noisebridge Hackerspace

Want to learn how to sew? Learn how to use a new machine? Dying to talk fashion or just want to work on a project? This is an informal gathering of people who use the sewing area at Noisebridge, or would like too. We don't have a particular program, it's just hanging out, talking and working on projects. Attendance varies a lot - you could be the only one , or there could be 10 people. However, our sewing area will always be open! Come if you've been sewing for a while, or you've never picked up a needle before It's free, but donation's accepted for sewing area upkeep, as always. A note about our space: Noisebridge has an incredible sewing area with 5 sewing machines, a giant table, dress form, ironing board and many sewing amenities. We have a great selection of donated fabric, thread and other notions that you can draw from. Here's our website, with more information about our space: https://noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Sewing You can do a project entirely from our donated fabrics here, but it's a bit of a grab-bag. If you want something specific, it's best to bring your own. PS If you need materials for a sewing project, we are next to a great fabric store - Fabric Outlet. It closes at 7pm exactly, so be sure to go before the meetup to get whatever you need PPS. We are accepting donations of perfectly working home machines, if you have any leads on one, please tell us.

  • Laser Cutter Safety Training

    Noisebridge

Noisebridge has a lovely 100W, 3 x 4 ft, CO2 laser cutter. Learn how to be safe while using the laser cutter! This training is required to use the laser cutter because we don't want people setting our most expensive donation on fire. Training covers * Dangers of the laser cutter * How to be safe * How to put out a fire Each participant will cut a piece of cardboard on the laser cutter while following all the safety steps. This is also a good place to ask questions about specific materials or projects. Almost everything at Noisebridge is pay-what-you-can. If you can comfortably do so, we ask that you donate $20 towards the laser fund for this class: https://donate.noisebridge.net/projects/laser
