Starting to get some concrete ideas, but still a little flexible if you're interested but would like to shift a day or two. I will make campground reservations soon & then dates will be firm.
The general idea is ride to Tuolumne via Coulterville (skipping the Priest Grade on hwy 120) and the Oak Flat entrance. The first few days are not tons of miles but will be hot, and there's a lot of Nothing on these roads (which is great but you need to carry what you need).
This ride will include super hot weather, a few days of hard climbing, both empty roads and busy traffic. I've done tons of touring but am working long office hours now & not in the very best of shape. So some days will push it, others not so much - this is not a great ride for either beginners or people who want to make 100 miles/day. (I do prioritize having at least one cold beer every afternoon, and like having a shower and/or a swim every day.)
Once inside Yosemite NP plan to ride early in the morning to avoid the dangerous traffic on very narrow Tioga Rd. and camp at White Wolf to avoid afternoon traffic (plus enjoy being there). Planning to stay two nights @ TM and do some hiking. Then take YARTS to the Valley, stay a night, and come back to SF via YARTS/Amtrak/BART. I'm open to catching a ride back but don't have a vehicle to contribute to that. We can stay at the backpacker camps at White Wolf, TM & in the Valley.
General route/schedule ideas are:
Day 1: Easy day, Iron Horse trail to Livermore & over the old Altamont Pass road. Camp at Caswell Memorial State Park ($5 hiker-biker site!)
Day 2: Ride mostly on county roads, probably through Oakdale for the fun of that but many route options; camp at Turlock Lake SRA
Day 3: Camp along 120 - climbing all day, see how far we get - several options for camping (range between forest service camp w/vault toilets to RV camp w/showers)
Day 4: Leave early to avoid traffic; camp at White Wolf
Day 5: Leave early, get to Tuolumne - crazy beautiful scenery all day, including Olmstead Pt & Tenaya Lake
Days 6+: Stay couple of nights at TM, a night in Yosemite Valley. Or two? then back to SF
