Goal Hike - EXTRA CHALLENGING -Gothic Basin - Mtn Loop Hwy

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION IN ITS ENTIRETY AND THE ACCOMPANYING LINKS SO SEE IF THIS HIKE IS APPROPRIATE BEFORE YOU RSVP.

YOU MUST BE A REGULAR HIKER WITH THIS GROUP TO JOIN IN THIS HIKE.  THIS CANNOT BE YOUR FIRST HIKE.  YOU MUST BE IN SOME KIND OF HIKING CONDITION TO DO THIS (AND I DON'T MEAN POOR).

I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO BUMP YOU OUT OF THIS HIKE IF I AM UNSURE IF YOU ARE ABLE TO DO THIS OR IF YOU  FREQUENTLY NO SHOW OR LATE CANCEL ON PREVIOUS EVENTS.

WE DON'T GO FAST BUT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT IN EIGHT HRS.

This is supposed to be super challenging but worth every step.  I hope I can do it. On the calendar as an incentive, but if not in condition may sub another.  Please consider the terrain, length, weather and fitness ability of yourself and your dog before bringing along your 4 legged buddy.  We don't want to injure a dog or ourselves on this do to poor planning.

Rugged and spectacular-yes. Gothic, perhaps, for this stark and mysterious basin harbors hidden tarns and disappearing waterways and is surrounded by spiraling peaks. A difficult hike on steep and rocky terrain, Gothic Basin with all its rich beauty can't keep hikers away; just as it couldn't keep miners away a century ago with its lure of riches. It was those hardy folk who built this path. It has been upgraded since-somewhat. The splendor of the basin, however, can't be improved one bit. Past glaciers and the agents of erosion have left it pretty darn near to perfect.

GROUP HIKING
Hiking with a group is very different from hiking as an individual. Each hiker has a responsibility to the group, as the group has a responsibility to each hiker. Participants  should plan to stay with the group for the duration of the hike.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
Dress for the Pacific Northwest out-of-doors: expect rain, snow, sunshine, fog and everything between.

HIKER ESSENTIALS
You Should Have:
BACK PACK WITH
FOOD, WATER,
EXTRA CLOTHING,
RAINGEAR,
FLASHLIGHT, MATCHES,
HIKING BOOTS OR HIKING SHOES,
MAP & COMPASS, FIRST AID KIT,
EMERGENCY SHELTER

Extra clothes, at minimum, should include a warm hat, gloves and a warm shirt/top. Cotton is not advised. Synthetic materials such as fleece and wool are better alternatives.
Some circumstances could require you to spend the night outside.
Being prepared is for your safety and the safety of the group.

Dogs are required to be leashed on this hike. If you decide you want to unleash your dog, it must be under voice control, stay on the trail, and away from leashed dogs. Give your self and dog adequate space from others. Please respect other hikers on the trail and restrain your dog when approaching or being approached by others

Basically, the closer in and more popular the hike and bigger the group the more insistent I am that dogs remain on leash. You should come expecting to have your dog leashed at all times.

A lot of fun thanks to a great team of ladies (and leader) who were encouraging along the way and kept a positive attitude during the greatest challenges! Looking forward? to Kathy's next challenge. Glad we started early!

okay, that was a whole lot more fun than I was expecting. It was a total body workout. I have never hiked a hike and had a stiff upperbody before. Beautiful, too. Thanks, ladies, for a great and tiring day.

I'd love to but I really don't think my two have done enough hiking this year. Would hate to slow group down or cause injury to the monsters. Have fun!!

I don't think how you could slow us down at all, Beth. We plan on taking it very slow. I don't think this hike is dog appropriate anyways and mine are staying at home.
