Jim’s BIO:
Jim Rather is a founding member and partner of Alker & Rather, LLC in Mandeville. Jim has over 25 years of experience representing property owners and managers in litigated landlord-tenant disputes in State and Federal courts throughout Louisiana. Jim has extensive experience handling cases involving the Fair Housing Act and Louisiana’s Equal Housing Opportunity Act, evictions, bodily injuries and mold exposures on leased premises and other aspects of landlord-tenant law.
In addition to his courtroom practice, Jim routinely represents clients in Federal and State administrative investigations involving alleged violations of fair housing and consumer protection laws. Outside the courtroom, Jim is general counsel to the Apartment Association of Louisiana (AAL) and several of its affiliates. Jim is an active member of AAL’s legislative team, counseling its Legislative Committee and lobbyist with respect to proposed legislation.
In this regard, during the 2024 legislative session, Jim partnered with a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives to draft H.B. 407 which places reasonable restrictions on the Emotional Support Animal industry. Jim has been recognized as a Louisiana SuperLawyer since 2020.
