NoSQL Meetup #4: CouchDB at the VPRO (and more Dynamo)

  • Sep 21, 2010 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

During the first couple of meetings, we talked about the fundamentals of NoSQL mostly. As of this meeting, we are going to mix in some reality and real experience, with Nils talking about CouchDB and its adoption at the VPRO. In addition to that, Paul will continue his exploration of the fundamentals of Amazon Dynamo. I am convinced it will be an exciting event. Not only because of the line-up, but also because of the location: the VPRO has invited us to have the meeting at their headquarters, at the Media Park in Hilversum. Needless to say that we graciously accepted their invitation. If you want, then you can enjoy a meal at their restaurant, which is being served between 17.30 and 18.30. On September 21, they will be serving cod with parsley-dairy butter sauce, green beans and mashed potatoes ('kabeljauwfilet met peterselie-roomboter jus, sperzieboontjes en aardappelpuree'). Bear in mind that it will be on your own expense. Nils told us that it will be around EUR 6,-. (The restaurant is also serving vegetarian meals, provided you order it in time. Just drop me a note if you need to know more.) Check
this page for details.

    Thanks Paul! And for the presentation too, you explained a tough subject with a lot of detail, not an easy job, but succeeded.

    Good and interesting meeting. First time I heard somebody explain Dynamo in a way that I could understand it. Kudos!
    VPRO case was nice as well

    Hi Rick,
    I checked the notes on Dynamo & everything is accurate. Great job!

    Ok merged as well. You're practically selling CouchDB and Futon now, by the way. :)

    Just a little thing: Futon is not just a viewer, but a full blown admin interface for CouchDB. You can use it to edit documents, design documents, run replication jobs, run the test suite, setup user accounts, etc.

    Hi Nils, Thanks for your errata! I just merged them with my original notes.

    If anyone else has changes or additions, please let me know!

    Rick, thanks for taking notes!

    A couple of corrections though:
    - Caml -> Camel
    - Your function -> Your reduce function
    - JSONP: a hack -> You could call it a hack, but it's not CouchDB specific and is widely used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSON#JSONP
    - VPRO has a nice -> Eh... a nice what? :o)
    - MobileMe runs on CouchDB -> no, UbuntuOne does
    - couchdb-x -> CouchDBX and more: http://www.couchone.com/get
    - Futon is included, not Linux-only
    - Keys can be arbitrary JSON, even full objects AFAIK

    Hi guys, here are my notes I made yesterday. Hope this helps in remembering the comments that were made along the way... https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=10e_tWESXDoPkvGaP3M6M9OdZza6gWtCkK70WNjG1B30&hl=nl&authkey=CLvD8ukL

    Rick made notes and I'm sure we can have the slides getting uploaded. (But if you are also looking for any fingerfood / beer left-overs, then you can just forget about that, buster.) ;-)

    Will there be a summary, slides or what have you that I can use to make up for the fact that I didn't show up (shame on me)

    Good to have some practical example of how people are using a NoSQL solution. The Dynamo talk was a little too chaotic and unfocused but did lead to nice discussions.
