CANCELLED - 2025 Bike-packing to Burney Falls State Park

Details

As I am sure you know, we are in the throws of a brutal heat wave. In addition, there are several lightning-related fires burning in our area, one of which is burning due west of Burney. Though the fire does not pose any danger of spreading our way, the smoke has been horrific and the most recent NWS alert has advised against strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours. This was a tough decision but, in the interest of everyone's health and safety, I am cancelling this year's trip, I promise I will try again next year.

This trip was a lot of fun last year.

Burney Falls State Park has a little used Hike and Bike site ($5 per person) located on the northeast side of the main campground. The site has picnic tables, a fire ring, bear boxes and is a short walk from flush toilets and showers—yes, showers! We will cycle from my house in Burney to Burney Falls State Park… 12 miles one-way, on relatively level roads (Hwy 299 and Hwy 89) with wide shoulders.

For those traveling from afar, I can provide Friday accommodations for up to six adventurers at my home in Burney. We will leave from my house in Burney at 9:00 AM Saturday and arrive at Burney Falls between 11:30 and 12:00 (before it gets too hot). After we set up camp we can explore the park, hike to the falls, and swim and fish at Lake Britton. On Sunday we can hang out in the park and then make a leisurely return to Burney.

As always, everyone is responsible for their own food and gear, though I do live close so I can perform bike rescues if necessary. And the park has a relatively well-stocked store if you forget anything--AND THEY HAVE ICE CREAM! Helmets are required for kids under 18 and strongly recommended for adults.

As always, everyone is responsible for their own food and gear
