Cafe Sci: What happens to a donated eye: cornea transplant & sight restoration
Professor Harminder S Dua University of Nottingham Many people in the UK carry organ donor cards to indicate their willingness for their organs to be removed and used where possible for transplantation into patients who suffer from conditions where the healthy donor organ can be used to replace their diseased or non-functioning organ. The need for this far exceeds the amount of organs available every year. The public and relatives of deceased individuals have many questions and concerns about the process of donation and organ retrieval, the effects or consequences on the body of their loved one (especially with eye donation), what is done with the eye removed and what information they can be given about the individual who has benefited from the donation. This Café Scientifique session will cover aspects of the corneal transplant procedure with examples of the benefit accrued by recipients; the research carried out on the unused part of the eye or on eyes that are deemed unsuitable for transplantation and the benefits thereof; and deal with the questions posed above and any that the audience may have. Professor HS Dua is chair and professor of ophthalmology, University of Nottingham and Consultant Ophthalmologist who specialises in Cornea transplant surgery and ocular surface reconstruction with stem cell transplantation. MEETING FORMAT: Our speaker talks, uninterrupted for 20 minutes, to introduce their topic. During a break to get drinks, the Hat goes round. Then there is an hour’s chaired question and answer session. Cafe Sci is funded by the Hat (no sponsors). We suggest a contribution £2 (waged or good pension) or £1 (unwaged). What we're about

Public Group

This Meetup group aims to explore some of the cultural aspects of life, and get people sharing experiences and getting thinking! We are a relaxed and friendly bunch, and we welcome new members to any of our events!

We host:

Monthly book group, held on the third Wednesday of each month.
Monthly film group, a trip to The Broadway cinema held on the first Wednesday of each month.
Nottingham Classics concerts.
Book swaps, where you can trade your old books with other group members.
Nottingham Café Scientifique and Culturel where, for the price of a coffee or glass of wine, you can come to explore the latest ideas in science and culture. Cafe Sci meets on Monday nights during term time. You can read more about Nottingham's Café Sci here (http://www.meetup.com/nottingham-culture-cafe-sci/pages/about_-_Cafe_Scientifique_et_Culturel_%28Nottingham%29).

We also hold other events or lectures that may be of interest, so why not look at our calendar (http://www.meetup.com/nottingham-culture-cafe-sci/#calendar) and see if anything sparks your interest!

As much as possible we try and co-ordinate our events with those on the Nottingham Social Activities Group (http://www.meetup.com/nottingham-social/) with whom we share many members; so why not join both and have a packed social calendar!
