3rd Annual Holiday Mixer and Toy Drive.

@ 7:00pm ~ Whenever

To Benefit
"The Fund for Alexandria's Child"

"Community Partners for Children"

"The Fund for Alexandria's Child" and "Community Partners for Children" works to enhance the quality of life of foster children and children at risk of abuse and neglect in the Alexandria VA area.  Every year they gather toys for local distribution to those that otherwise may not receive anything over the holiday season.

I'm asking everyone to bring at least ONE NEW UNWRAPPED TOY (per person) to the party.  These toys will be donated to "The Fund for Alexandria's Child" and the value of the toys is 100% tax deductible.  I personally volunteer every year in handing out these toys to the families that need them and I can promise you that it makes a huge impact during the holiday season.

By bringing at least ONE NEW UNWRAPPED TOY and having paid your (highly suggested) $5 annual NOVA-CBG membership fee then all you're responsible for is your own booze, NOVA-CBG (as stated later on) will cover the food, darts, and pool.

It's not like NOVA-CBG is a money making entity, just the opposite. We try to keep the activities as cost free as possible.  This Holiday Mixer is no exception, we want folks to show up and not worry about financials so if your pocketbook says you can't bring a toy or pay the membership fee please come anyways.  The larger picture is that it is more important to celebrate the holiday season with friends old and new, and if we can help some of those less fortunate in the process... all the better.

This is not to say that the NOVA-CBG won't accept donations to help defer the costs associated with such an event (again, if your pocketbook is telling you THAT type of message) ... so I'll leave that totally up to you.

We have our date :
Saturday 12/1/2012

We have our time :
7:00pm until whenever the heck I'm full of Holiday Cheer!!
(it will be very late in the evening)

We have our place :
The Bungalow (aka Bungalow Billiards and Brew)

2766 South Arlington Mill Drive
Arlington, VA[masked]

The Ride

For your riding pleasure (riding a bar stool that is) please join us in celebrating a great 2012 Bicycling Season and in wishing everyone a great upcoming and joyous Holiday Season. It's a happy hour type event (in style only ... this is a party and will run late into the evening) so no special dress required but it will be nice to see everyone in their "going out" clothes (and maybe a Santa hat or two) and not in bike gear for once. Feel free to bring your "significant" along for the fun and frolic but please mark your RSVP as (+1) so that I know.

NOVA-CBG will be supplying the basic bar type munchy food , dart boards, and all the pool tables for our own fun and amusement throughout the evening. The pool tables are ours for the entire evening so plan on staying a while and enjoying yourselves.

Your basic bar menu is as such (apologies to you calorie counters or vegetarians):

  • Bungalow Chicken Wings
  • Hot Bungalow Meatballs
  • Loaded Potato Skins
  • Chicken Fingers

All beverages are up to you, your liver, and your pocket book. Speaking of beverages, please plan your transportation accordingly (carpool, bus, cab, etc..) if you want to indulge in the "Holiday Cheer" a bit (and here's hoping you do).

Parking is quite plentiful in the Shirlington area. The parking lot directly in front of Bungalow's fills up rather quickly but there are a number of FREE parking garages right around the corner for your parking convenience.

Shirlington is NOT Metro Rail accessible, however it is a very short cab ride from the Pentagon City Metro Station or the Braddock Metro Station (3-ish miles from both). Shirlington also has a Metro Bus stop if that is easier for you. If you let me know ahead of time I'm sure we can figure out a way to carpool with those that want to take the Metro Rail.

The Meeting Spot

I've made reservations for our group at "The Bungalow". It's located in Shirlington Village and we've been in this area before for a few of our rides (Busboys and Poets and the Shirlington Library is right near here). When you walk in just ask for the Northern Virginia Casual Bicycling Group or "NOVA-CBG" and they will point you in the right direction.

Click HERE to map you own directions.

Here is a small map of where "Bungalow Billiards" is located (if you click on the map it will bring you to the main Google maps page so you can move the map around and the like) :

The Fine Print

All members of NOVA-CBG are "spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably, and reliably" Welcome !!! (do you know where that quote is from?)

Never been on a bike ride with us? - This is your invitation to come on out and meet us and get ready for the spring season.

Been on a bunch of bike rides with us? - Then you already know to order me a Firefly Vodka and Lemonade in a Tall Glass !! (a John Daly as it is called).

In this rare case, helmets are NOT required (unless you can't hold your "Holiday Cheer" .. then maybe they are).

Looking forward to seeing everyone for some Holiday Fun and Frolic.

I know this is going to sound funny but Bungalows asked me to ask you guys that if you enjoyed yourself .... it would be beneficial to them for you to go to Yelp and say as such. You know the drill, good reviews and such always help restaurants. Bungalows has been good to us as a group so I have no problems recommending them. Thanks!

Gary did another amazing feat with the group!! Thanks for all the time and hard work you give so generously!!!

  • Pam

Carl, thanks so much for the time and love you put into the picture-posters! I had a great time looking at them and visually enjoying all of the rides put together by such great leaders!

Season’s greetings to all! In case you missed the retrospective photo posterboards at last night’s NOVA-CBG party, I’ve uploaded mini-versions of them to the pic collection for this event (photos 61-64). They’re basically a distillation of the 4,288 photos (an insane number – but trust me, I counted) from the 113 NOVA-CBG rides this past year. Enjoy!

Also, I know you all join me in thanking and congratulating Gary. Who else could bring holiday merriment to 150+ people, score several new bikes for charity, and coordinate a multitude of toy donations that will bring joy to those less fortunate this holiday season? And to think all of this is the work of one humble dude in a Cookie Monster T-shirt... Wow. Santa is SO jealous. :) Thank you for everything, Gary. And happy holidays to all!

Thanks Carl for putting the pictures together on the poster boards.... they look terrific! A graphical way to encapsulate the year....

How do you say "Thank You" to such an amazing group of people? Let me at least try.

Thanks to EVERYONE for bringing out so many toys and making donations to the "fund". These toys are staying in our community and will have a direct positive impact on the local children this holiday season. Please understand that you HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE this holiday season to a number of families and I want to personally thank you for that.

Thanks to all the organizers for the support / encouragement over the years. It is important to remember that groups like this just don't "happen" and are always the combined efforts of many people. At risk of leaving someone out Al, Sam, Chris R, Carl, Claudine, Karen, Rick, Sharon, Randi, Gene, Andrea P, Stephanie, Jonathan, Brent, Kathleen, Bill, George, Rebecca, and Mary have all led and / or supported rides this past season. It is because of these people that the group exists and is as good as it is, I'm honored to ride with all of them.

Simply fantastique! Congratulations Gary on a successful and joyful gathering and getting a good amount of toys. I had a great time playing pool. Great company. Thanks to all.

Well organized and fun. The only problem was that no one ever kicked me off the pool table, so I didn't get out and mingle. ;)

Thanks Ada for the Groupon link... I just bought one.. what a deal and what a great way to pass along the holiday sharing... THANKS !!

    November 25, 2012

  • Ada

For all you "Groupon-groupies", there's a $20 for $10 ToysRUs Groupon going on right now. Instead of bringing just one toy, you can get more for less. Here's a link: Don't wait too long or it might expire.

Looking forward to seeing folks and helping out needy kids!
