Postponed: Code Clinic

POSTPONED: Due to the approaching storm, it is probably best that we postpone this one for a week or two. We'll set up a new meetup event when we figure out the date.

The next meetup of the NovaRUG will be devoted to getting beginners up to speed. We will have a Code Clinic to get new developers set up with Ruby and Rails.

Code Clinic: The rest of this meeting will be a Code Clinic / Newbie Help. Bring your problems (Ruby-related :-) and machines. No guarantees, but we'll try to help people get setup and resolve their issues. Even if you don't have any issues, please come; maybe you can help somebody else, even if you don't feel qualified. And whether you're helping, being helped, or just listening, I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to learn.

(This part is now cancelled. Dave is now unavailable that week) Ruby Gotchas: There are numerous little gotchas in any language, even Ruby. I've got a little list, some of which will "get" newbie programmers... and some of which are more likely to "get" experienced programmers coming from other languages! Presenter Dave Aronson will cover as many as I can squeeze in, including what it is, who it's likely to get, and, if feasible, ways to work around it. Your suggestions (for gotchas and solutions) are welcome.

I'm looking forward to attending this upcoming meetup as I know nothing about Ruby and this could be a way of me learning something new.

Sounds good for Oct 30th! Can you do this then as a presentation?

Could we combine this with a clinic to get new people started? I recently got two requests from people wanting help getting Ruby installed/Rails set up, etc. We could do this presentation in the middle to helping people get set up (people besides just me and Andrew have to volunteer for that, of course!). The code clinic idea is like this:

November 2066! Wow, this group goes back to the dark ages!

Oops, I guess hitting [Enter] sends the message...I'll try to send a message on a *real* messaging forum when I get a chance. ;)

April - first, I would say it's totally up to you. If you want to wait until you get there to set it up, we'll be glad to do our best to help you. On the other hand, if you want to give it a shot, and bring any questions/problems to the meetup, that's fine too, and the experience might be good for you.
