About the book:

Wild : From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe--and built her back up again.
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State--and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than "an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise." But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.
Strayed faces down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, "Wild "vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

We always go to a restaurant to dine after the discussion so plan to join us for this.

This is a popular group that usually has a waiting list. If you RSVP that you’re coming to the month’s book discussion, please do come (and read the book). If a member R.S.V.P.s, "yes" and doesn't show up without explanation, that member will be removed from the group.

Thank you Leigh for saying that, for I never want to say too much but it felt good and truly love this book is my special 'just me' thing to share with a special group:)

Great discussion last night! Special thanks to Loreen and Donna (?) for sharing their special memories of their mothers. I was touched by the daisy story :)

Ok, so I couldn't stop wondering about Paul and what happened to him. I read in an article last night that they remained active friends for a few years after the divorce but then they haven't been in contact for the past 10 years. He did send her an email when the book came out to tell her that he thought it was great and appreciates the way she wrote about their relationship...or something like that. She was glad to hear that.

I can't go to this one and after this I am moving to Texas. I loved being in the group. What a great group of people! As for the book, I didn't like this one. I ended up giving up on it early. Reminded me too much of 'Eat, Pray, Love'. I just felt like telling her, get over yourself already! Who cares about your reckless hike. I know cold hearted! Why leave on a wishy washy note...take care everyone!

I second what Lisa said. I've been in the group for a few years and the only time I remember it being completely full was for Gone Girl, but then Lisa added a second discussion to accommodate. Patience, people ;-) If you really want to come, just wait...on the waiting list and you'll be fine. This isn't meant to be "snippy"...I just woke up and I'm not a morning person...haha.

It seems there is always a wait list. Is anyone interested in having another book discussion group?

    June 3, 2013

    • Lisa

I don't know why but people always drop off the wait list before the meetings start. We have had wait lists of 12-14 before and still only had 16 show up at a meetup. If you look at the meetups for the last year we have never even had 24 at a single meetup. You are welcome to start your own group but don't let the wait list stop you from signing up.

I looked to attend my first meeting this month but am unable to do so because of the wait list. I am new to the area but would love to get involved with a book club and this group picks books I enjoy. If a second group was started up, I would definitely be interested. Thanks!

Looks like we need a second "novel bunch" to accommodate the crowds.
