Up and Running with Simple Build Tool

You may or may not have heard of a tiny but fantastic tool with a fantastic community that provides first class Scala support called
sbt, short for simple-build-tool. To get those people get up to speed with sbt up to speed quickly, Doug Tangren will start us off with a high level overview of sbt. After that we'll have a coding session (BRING UR LAPTOPS) so that seasoned sbt users can help those new to sbt try out the environment and transition their scala projects into sbt. This is also a call for volunteer sbt-vets to share experiences and tips.

@eric (and anyone else) could you shoot Nathen, Steven or I your github account name. You can send us a message by clicking the contact us link up and to the left. We'd just need it to add you as a contributor to the repo

Doug - I am interested in helping with a group project, be it a sbt equivalent of mvn dependency:tree or something else. Keep me (us) posted.

PS - could you link to the "Read and Tell" meetup you mentioned? I could not find it. Thx!

I'll answer what I can. What I can't, I'll encourage others to chime in. What I'd like to do is make this into an example of how we can use the group to share information interactively and collectively. What I originally intended this meetup to be was a first steps talk for people who are new to sbt and want to find out more about it. I'd be happy to expand it into a series of talks which get more advanced.

    ... continued:
    - Good sources for plugins. In particular, plugins that help you migrate from say Maven or Ant to SBT. As an example: Maven has pretty decent property filtering on resources, how to do the same with SBT. So, plugins that help cover the functionality gap between Maven and Ant and SBT would be appreciated.
    - Creating shaded/uber jars (example: proguard plugin).
These are the items I confronted when first starting to use SBT and seem in the spirit of an "up and running" talk.

Points I think worth brining up/addressing:

    - What are the differences between SBT 0.7.x and 0.9.x (0.9.x is supposed to break a lot of stuff and not everyone is going to the NE Scala Symposium where some of this will be covered).
    - Techniques, approaches, suggestions on how to invoke scala tools written for 2.8.x or 2.9.x (i.e. how not to be stuck writing everything in your plugin and forever be stuck in 2.7.x universe).
    ... continued.

That would be great Ivan. I expect at least some questions about IDE integration. I don't use an IDE so any help in that area would be appreciated.

Will anyone be talking about how to integrate SBT with Intellij? I will be happy to demonstrate. Takes all of 2 minutes. :)

To get the most of Monday, it may help if you start thinking about any questions you may have about sbt this weekend. I hope the second half of this meetup is more interactive. If you've ran into any road blocks in the past, let's work on them together Monday.
