Re: [newtech-1] CMS for Law Firm Website: Off the Shelf vs. Custom Solution

Aren't Joomla and Drupal PHP solutions? I'm a .NET developer and haven't played around with DotNetNuke (DNN) but I'm also looking to get my hands dirty with off-the-shelf customizable CMSes for client sites. No particular requirements at the moment, but I want to evaluate and learn some that would be beneficial for potential clients.

I am of a different philosophy. Most of the time, you can get 80-90% of what you need from off the shelf. Unless that last 10-20% really is absolutely critical, you save huge expense and effort (not to mention ability to manage going forward) by using off the shelf. Even in the latter case, it is usually cheaper, faster and more supportable to use off-the-shelf with some customization.

We build custom management systems all the time and in my opinion; you are
always better off building a custom system based on your exact needs and
functionalities than using an off the shelf product like joomla. In the
event you would like to add a functionality down the line that joomla
doesn't support; it is very difficult to alter their code etc.

My suggestion would be to define exactly what functionalities you need; and
go from there what you feel is best. I recommend ASP.NET 2.0 and MySql.

are the really heavyweight ones
They have every module you can thing of, published books and
massive communities with
support forums behind them. But they are overkill for most people.

They have the most commercial support too.

There are tons of shops in NYC and DC that exclusively do Drupal/
Joomla/Typo3 installation/configuration/design. They've been
unoffically endorsed by the non-profit and political sectors, and an
entire commercial design industry has sprung up around them

There is also Bricolage and Krang

	http://www.bricolage.cc/
	http://krangcms.com/

They're the 2 classic Perl CMS that have been around for years.
Kineticode even funded integrating a PHP interpreter with Perl ( yes,
you heard that right ) so Bricolage could be extended with PHP. In
terms of power and scaling, few applications - open source or
overpriced commercial solutions - can compare to those apps.
