I know people living/working in shipping containers that they placed on a lot in Oakland, CA. It's an interesting mix of people who've actually turned them into pleasant, contemporary homes. It's kind of like apartment living but with a large shared space.

That was the other concept I had invested a great deal of ideas into... Utilizing shipping containers to build a low cost Live/Work environment for creative types.

Its a bit of a project, creating a viable live/work complex. I imagine there's all kinds of liability to consider ;)

I was out in Bushwick early this summer... ALOT of buildings up for grabs in the factory areas... full on factories with loading docks, almost as big as half a city block. A four block walk from the L Train...

I used to live in a factory on the Montrose station (across the street from the Bushwick Projects, About 1200 square feet of raw space, 20 foot ceilings... Was paying about $1000 a month. It could have housed 20+ workers.

Believe me, if I could take a Bushwick factory situated on the L-train line and convert it into viable live/work studios... I would in a New York Minute.

Barring all the foreseeable and unforeseen issues with Live/Work spaces.

Expensive office space IS a problem. ;)

Expensive living space IS a problem too.

Removing one problem is part of an overall solution.

Location is a big issue.

I've seen supposed industry leaders stand up in front of the City Counsel and say it's all about rent. You create the cheap rent opportunity and start-ups will follow.

I've also seen industry insiders say that they need to be in the heart of the industry. (Somewhere near a Shake Shack:-)

and others believe it needs to be on top of a subway with a "fat pipe" (Internet)

I think anything that you can do to create a critical mass is key.

Services are important but that kinda flies in the face of "cheap"

I'm not sure. ;)

I've seen all kinds of wondrous opportunities shrivel on the vine because of a lack of support/interest.

Just getting a space and hanging a sign outside is no guarantee that people will make use of it.

You need to create interest and add enough value to make it stick.

Thing is. There's space everywhere... Not JUST across the country...
There's space in the five boroughs.

One could take the L train to Bushwick (not gentrified Bushwick...
like 3 more stops into Bushwick) and find whole factories with loads
of space.

Independent Game Production is picking up speed and changing the
field. New York could be a cornerstone of the development scene but
rents will ALWAYS be an issue... both workspace and living space.
