All due respect, I don't know how typical your story is. A maid once spilled a bit of Windex (yes, I know...) on my brother's machine, while it was still in warranty, but Apple would not touch it, or at least, they wanted some $700 even though the bottom was plenty scratched, and were going to declare our warranty void. TekServe fixed it for only $250 or so...

I had a friend pour a quart of coffee on my MacBook. Fried. Apple
replace everything and then gave it a new case, just because the old
one had a scratch.
