The mail was sent to subscribers and non-subscribers and came from a domain that they do not use for e-mail. All subscription related mail is sent from [address removed] not [address removed]. It may be that someone figured out how to relay mail through that domain. The resulting traffic against the homedelivery.nytimes.com site has resulted in that site becoming overloaded.
