Thanks for the offer, JoAnna.  That was very kind and thoughtful. I agree flash sites definitely look way cooler - I love http://www.sexysassysmart.tv ;)   For now we might have to stick to the text version for SEO reasons as Dean correctly pointed out. But I will definitely take you up on your offer in the future.

Alex, that's a great idea about experts. I think people definitely are always looking for expertise in something or the other. I think I'll add some sub-categories to the services section to better reflect that. http://www.garysguide.org/nyctech/services
Btw what expertise are people typically looking for? We can make sub-categories for some of the popular ones while allowing a custom field for the rest.

cheers,
Gary

Andy,

What kind of question is that to ask me my age???  As I said, it is just my thought for I am ONLY producing sites in Flash and ALL VIDEO.
As I said, I am not here to argue.  If that is the case, I will not share my thoughts any more.  I have been doing the same thing for a long time and I strongly believe in Broadband and in Flash.  It is just my style.  So much for making any comments, and as I said,......I am NOT here to argue.  It is NOT my style.

As for the age question....all I can say is that, didn't your mom ever teach you not to ask a woman her age?

Greatest form by whose definition?

If you don't mind my asking ... how old are you?

Since it is a group of people who are into technology, why not use the greatest form?  I would never do a site that is not done in Flash.  Just my thoughts.  I am not here to argue.

What in the world does Flash have to do with promoting, organizing and growing the NY tech community?

A) You can design excellent looking/feeling sites without any Flash/Silverlight/AJAX/complicated DHTML
B) Some people just don't like Flash, and some people still, to this day, have issues running it

I think this is a very thoughtful and considerate idea that Gary proposed.  The only problem I have is that I think since this is a tech group, why not have a site in all flash that really stands out?  Why not put it in Flash? Keep it short and sweet, but easy to navigate and a bit on the edge in look and design.  This is the best tech group  in New York.  If it is what the group wants, and they want to go with this I would contribute something for Gary's time.  No offense to him, but I think with this group the site should be  in Flash.
I do not mean to offend Gary for his kindness though.  I also think to use video in some ways too.  Sorr, but I only like to thing in terms of Broadband and the use of video and Flash.

After reading the excellent thought provoking ideas & suggestions from many of you recently including Sanford, Charlie, Richie, Scott, Nate, Joe, James, Hans and especially David Rose's recent testimony to the city council, I realized that one of the things lacking is a simple directory of resources. So over the past couple of weeks I have put together a site to fulfill this need.

You can check it out at http://NYCTech.info

The purpose is not to be a destination site but more of a starting point / directory pointing to the myriad local tech resources, organizations, funding sources, mailing lists, user-groups, entrepreneurship programs, tech blogs, service vendors, job boards, startup companies, etc. etc. etc.

This should be especially useful to those who are just getting their feet wet in the NYC startup/tech scene and aren't sure where to look. Many of them take their first steps by coming to the NY Tech Meetup to see exciting new startups, join nextNY to connect with a vibrant smart group of people or browse Gary's Guide to see a list of all upcoming events. We hope this directory will help take them a step further to explore the long tail of resources and connect with the right people in the community.

This is still very much a first iteraton / work-in-progress and over the coming weeks we'll be adding more information to the site and fleshing out details while at the same time keeping it extremely simple and to the point. We'll be opening up the site soon so that anyone will be able to add/edit stuff etc. We'll also be adding sections for listing volunteers & mentors (for those of you who want to reach out to younger upcoming entrepreneurs and lend a helping hand, answer their questions etc).

We'll need all the help we can get in promoting it across the various nooks and crannies of our city including schools, colleges, wall st firms, big tech companies etc until no one has an excuse anymore to say they want to start a tech company in NYC but don't know where to begin.

We'll also be promoting it heavily on Garysguide which is currently live in 13 of the top tech cities in the country and it wouldn't hurt to pimp our NYC Tech scene to San Fran, LA or Boston folks looking for a change of scenery :)

Hope you find the site useful. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might benefit from it. Comments/feedback always appreciated.

Looking forward to working closely with all of you to take our wonderful NYC Tech community to the next level. Yes we can! :)

cheers,
Gary
