RE: [newtech-1] Script/tool to find the source of "404 page not found error"

That information is typically only available to the Web server, so log analyzers will do this. Just try a search for "log analyzer" and I'm sure you'll find a few E.g. [ http://awstats.so... ]

But due to the way most web applications ( e.g. Wordpress, Joomla, etc ) handle friendly URLs nowadays this gets a bit more complicated. Because the web server will often not report a 404 but instead just send the requested path to a predetermined script for routing. Hence now that routing script will have to log the 404, not the web server. All this means is that your solution may now have to be application aware to catch all 404s.

Best regards,
Kervin

It doesn't give you the source URL of the page where the link is broken. It only shows you which page was accessed .

You can use your google webmaster tools to find this info.

I spent about 15-20 minutes to find a script/tool that can monitor the source of "page not found" so that you can quickly find that page where the link is broken and fix it.

I couldn't find one such tool. Either I am really bad in Google-ing or there is an opportunity?

I definitely see a need for such script that can be installed like Google analytics code and notifies you whenever a visitor is hit by such error so that you can quickly track it and fix it.

WOuld appreciate if someone knows such solution already exists.. if not, I guess - I will have my team just build it!!!
