What level of control over these sites do you have? e.g., Do you have permission to modify the Apache configuration?

If your site has good 404 page eg - http://www.galaxyweblinks.com/resources/technical-expertise/programming-framework-expressionengine/, I am not sure if crawler will pick it up.

Plus - I think, I want a service that notifies me whenever there is a broken link since there are several sites which huge number of pages, that keep adding new content/pages.

Varun, there are a few crawlers out there that will report broken links.

I don't recommend it, but you could write something in Python very quickly as well. You might want to try something like http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/seo-tools/google-sitemap-generator/

You can use your google webmaster tools to find this info.

I spent about 15-20 minutes to find a script/tool that can monitor the source of "page not found" so that you can quickly find that page where the link is broken and fix it.

I couldn't find one such tool. Either I am really bad in Google-ing or there is an opportunity?

I definitely see a need for such script that can be installed like Google analytics code and notifies you whenever a visitor is hit by such error so that you can quickly track it and fix it.

WOuld appreciate if someone knows such solution already exists.. if not, I guess - I will have my team just build it!!!
