Re: [newtech-1] Reminder of Guidelines for NYTM Mailing List

On the topic of respectful dialogue, I thought I'd share a really interesting "communication agreement" that a former teacher of mine posted recently: http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/rodefshalom

It includes a few basic principles of communication, dialogue and conflict resolution, all grounded in classic Jewish philosophical texts. Maybe a little outside the normal bounds of NYTM, but I think it has a message that most of us can relate to. From the intro para:

I agree to become a rodef shalom (pursuer of peace), a partner in the effort to transform society by changing the way I communicate with others and deal with conflict. I pledge henceforth to approach differences of opinion with an open and inquiring mind and to make every effort to avoid generalizing or demonizing those who disagree with me. I will try to be a force for changing bitter destructive disagreements to machlokot leshem shamayim, constructive conflicts for the benefit of all humankind.

Enjoy!

Good Morning NYTM Community -

After reading some of the discussion happening on the NYTM mailing list this morning, please read this important note below addressing the guidelines for conduct in our online community.

NY Tech Meetup uses the mailing list and discussion forum provided by Meetup.com as a way for our members to connect, share resources, and support each other. While most members use these tools for this purpose, there are some who have chosen to use it for purposes that are completely against what NY Tech Meetup stands for.

Our discussion forum should never be used to demean, discriminate, threaten, bully, incite violence or in any other way diminish the sanctity of a community that thrives the most when members are being supportive, thoughtful, helpful, and adding value.

We have kept the discussion forum unmoderated to allow for free exchange of ideas, but that does mean that any and all behavior will be tolerated.

Every member of this community deserves to feel welcome and comfortable. For any of you who have ever been made to feel otherwise through the commentary in our online community, please accept our deepest apologies.

You can help us by reporting any abuse that you witness on the mailing list. If you witness inappropriate commentary or behavior on the mailing list or discussion forum, please report it to us as soon as possible to us at [address removed]
