Re: [newtech-1] Unlocked phones/SIM cards for Australia/New Zealand?

I used my AT&T unlocked Nexus 5 all throughout New Zealand. I just put a new sim in there was no problem it just worked. The only issue for me was I was used to more data. So I had to load up the data portion of the SIM several times.

There were cell phone shops everywhere, that you could buy sims from. Buying there meant you could put in the SIM, and test that it worked while in the store.

I have used several models of iPhone and iPad with local sim and no problem. Any multi band phone from the last 5 years should be the same, it's not the question it might once have been.

When choosing a network, all will work gone in the cities such as Melbourne but if venturing out (well worth it in such a great country) then Telstra has far more coverage.

If you don't buy a SIM before you go its very easy to find a Telstra shop. There are lots.

@Kim: Renting a satellite phone is a bit of overkill, don't you think? He's going to Australia/New Zealand, not the back of beyond.

@Andrew: agreed. The whole buying/leasing a handset from a carrier idea is a total ripoff. Get an unlocked GSM handset from any number of manufacturers (e.g. the dual-SIM OnePlus X for ~US$ 200) and be done with it.

Hi Dave,
I travel overseas often, from experience even an unlocked phone the operating system can malfunction, most of US pho especially won't work, no matter what the carrier tells you which I found out in France/Spain. You can go two ways rent a satellite phone through National Geographic, or wait and get a pay as you go phone when you get there. Hope this helps and best of luck

As I posted a few weeks ago, I'll be going to Melbourne and Auckland to deliver a number of workshops/tutorials at a CS conference (Geelong, near Melbourne), and to deliver a talk (Auckland).

I'd like to find out what attributes/properties are required of an unlocked phone in order for it to be used, with a SIM card in Melbourne, and what attributes/properties are required of an unlocked phone in order for it to be used, with a SIM card in Auckland.

If anyone has a suggestion for a particular phone(s), and where to buy them at reasonable costs, I'd be grateful. (Friends have bought unlocked phones usable in South America for $50-$60 US dollars each.)

Finally, any thoughts on buying the SIM cards in the US, rather that down under? Any suggestions as to where to buy them? Amazon? other?

TIA
Dave
