See, this is the exact kind of responses I hoped to get. This is very useful, because I want both sides. And I got em.

From what I can tell, it doesn't matter if you go to MIT so much in the long run as in the short run. So go with a cheaper alternative. Yup. I get it. And I might go into something other than comp engineering or telecommunications, because these ET classes I am taking now are non transferable.

TOMORROW, I will speak to the Chairperson of The Tech Department, hopefully he'll point me in the right direction.

And thanks for your honestly useful reply.

IMHO, it all depends on what you want career-wise. Personally, if you want to get into the upper echelons in management, I think you might want a big name school with connections.

If you're going to staying in the development arena, unless you're going to a Google, Facebook, etc., I would go with a cheaper alternative.

Plus, and trust me on this, who knows what you'll be doing 10 years from now. I have so many friends who went to school for their passion in life and are doing nothing near what they degreed in.

I started out in restaurant management and doing the whole chef thing. Programming was always my passion in life and so I got a degree and a job.I didn't go to school until I was 25, then it was one of those technical colleges. I went on to get my Bachelors from George Mason (a "commuter" school) and I've started on a Master's degree.

But here it is 12 years later and I'm burned out on IT. I still love to program and do all things computer but all the other stuff that goes with it has worn me down. I went through a total of 8 layoffs at my company and now I'm consulting, changing jobs every 6 months. Management is clueless about IT and only sees the bottom line. Staffs run lean and so you're always on call.

So here I am about to change careers again. I started a travel agency doing cruises and resorts and I love every minute of it. I'm my own boss and only have my customers to answer to. No getting up to commute. The paycheck is not steady but for now, I am loving life and living off the six figure salary I earned for all those years ;).

Who knows? Give it another 10 years and maybe I might just hate this, too.

All I'm saying is just don't think that what you want to do know will be the same 10, 20, 30 years down the road. Once the reality of that job hits, it might be something entirely different! And when that happens, the last thing you wanna do is be stuck with $100K worth of student loans.

Stuart,

I have to say that Richard isn't playing with us. He's a teen who is confused with what he wants. We've all been there in our early days.

But Richard, you better clear up with us what the heck do you want? You are contradicting yourself in so many places and putting words in our mouths. Quit doing that or I'll tell your mom to give you a good lecture on speaking clearly.

OK, that's it for me on this thread. Have fun, all.
