Hi Matt,

Native apps provide for a long list of benefits, not just push notification option. Of course, this particular app may not need full functionalities of mobile devices and could be OK with other solutions.

Best,

Hi Tony (and this larger group!) -

First, I must say that I completely agree with Les on the need to take caution when evaluating proposals, not all engineers and designers have the same level of experience - and that means from a skill perspective and from a client-management perspective :)

While I also agree that a native app is not necessary for all businesses, there is indeed some benefit in being able to send push notifications via your app that a website does not afford.  That may not be enough of a reason to build a native app, but it’s still worth exploring based on additional features you may want to add for Lima Charlie News.

In terms of evaluating groups who can work for you, you should certainly take into consideration the projects they’ve worked on in the past, as well as the overall design and presentation of their own website.  I can not imagine a poorly designed website or app being successful in today’s mobile world, where trust is derived from a stellar user experience and where graphic and UI design are crucial to that overall UX.

The only one not on here that I would add is STRV as we are brand new to NYC.  I’m not afraid to publicly represent our company, as I know we do amazing work!  I would not have left my role at ESPN to join this team if I didn’t truly believe in them :)

And beyond design and development - if anyone has any questions about startups in general, please feel free to email me.  I spent three years at Apple as the team lead for the App Store editorial team, where it was my job to feature the apps on the front page each week.  I left Apple to do my own startup for three years, so I absolutely understand the challenges of trying to build your own app for the first time.  And for the past two years at ESPN I was a senior product manager, where I’ve learned best practices for feature prioritization, working with software like Jira and Trello, planning sprints with your designers and developers, bringing in stakeholder input from marketing, sales, legal and other teams.

I left because I really enjoy helping people build their ideas, especially ideas intended to make the world a better place!

Thanks for reading this novel lol.

Best,
-Matt

Hi there Les,

Yes, exactly!!! I am very curious on resources, experience, and tools. I know that there are many many companies that will make it, build it, run it, submit it. The evaluation process and initiation of what I need to get done is where the guidance of this list is important.

Another point made my Anthony Zeoli - Does LimaCharlieNews need an app??

Do They??? is there a community engagement aspect to app's and does a growing Blog need one??

Tony - I urge you caution when evaluating the responses you're getting so far and are likely to keep getting.

You're asking for some good referrals and recommendations.  Unfortunately what you're getting is lots of "That's exactly what we do!" responses from everyone and their brother trying to sell you something.

All - The primary purpose of this is list is not to be a commercial funnel into your own business.  It's to provide resources, recommendations and guidance to those looking for it. If I reply to Tony and say, "I've worked with firm xyz and I had a great experience.", I consider that a good response because there's no conflict of interest; my only objective is to help Tony out.  But when the reply is "My firm can do that for you!", you're no longer getting a response that has your best interests in mind.  You're getting a commercial response aimed at getting your business.  Full stop.

People - Let's try to get back to giving advice purely because we want to help someone out, not because we're trying to win business for our own companies.

Are you looking only for dev or design as well?

Hi there everyone,

I need to have a new app built for a wordpress news site. The publication website is www.limacharlienews.com. It's in proof of concept. As such, so will the app, for now. Does anyone know of some local and offshore company's that are reputable? If you can help or need some further info (which I think u might) please email me

Cheers and thank you all so much in advance.
