Throughout Africa -- mainly in Christian countries -- vast numbers of children have been abandoned by their parents, or worse, often maimed or tortured, on suspicion of being "witches."
The witch hunts aren't just a resurgence of indigenous beliefs. They are caused, at least in part, by the demons-demons-everywhere mentality encouraged by a new and rapidly growing worldwide religious movement within the Pentecostal/charismatic branch of Christianity, with major leading figures here in the U.S.A.
Aggressive crusades against alleged malevolent "witches" are encouraged by the "spiritual warfare" doctrines of some major leaders of one of the world's fastest-growing international religious movements, the "apostolic and prophetic" wing of Pentecostal/Charismatic Christianity.
A detailed discussion of this problem, formerly posted here on this page, has been moved to the post American connections to African witchhunts (http://www.blog.nyarbb.com/?p=117) on the NYARBB blog, where it has also been updated and expanded, with more specifics and more references to sources added. If you have further information to share on this topic before the meeting, please post it in the thread American connections to African witchhunts (http://www.meetup.com/nyarbb/messages/boards/thread/9776777/).
At this meeting, we will discuss the problem and also discuss what can be done about it. We'll brainstorm ways to (1) attract the mass media's attention to the problem and (2) attract the attention of large religious bodies.
We ask mainstream Christians — and non-theocratic evangelicals, Pentecostals, and charismatics — to speak out against the witch hunts. We ask non-Christians to become aware of what is going on and to encourage Christians to speak out.
This meeting will be a follow-up to the annual Pagan Pride festival (http://www.meetup.com/nyarbb/calendar/13373064/).
Our meeting, over dinner, will be preceded and followed by some time for informal socializing.
We welcome all who oppose the religious right wing. We especially welcome people who can inform us about issues affecting their own particular minority group or subculture.
Location and how to find us: We'll be meeting at a Chinese restaurant on 7th Avenue, near Rockefeller Center. (The exact address, and other details, will be visible to you once you join this Meetup group.) The nearest subway stop is 49th Street on the N, R, and W lines (7th Avenue). Other nearby subway stops are 50th Street on the 1 line (Broadway), 50th Street on the E and C lines (8th Avenue), 47th to 50th Street on the B, D, F, and V lines (6th Avenue), and 7th Avenue on the B, D, and E lines (53rd Street). For those coming from outside the city, Pearls is also approximately a 15-minute walk from Penn Station and approximately a 10-minute walk from Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Ask a waiter for "New Yorkers Against Religion-Based Bigotry."
We'll be at a table in the UPSTAIRS part of the restaurant. There will be some NYARBB literature on the table.
