Canoeing trip in the Adirondacks

  • to

  • Tupper Lake Motel

255 Park St, Tupper Lake, NY (map)

  • We did this canoeing trip years ago and it was amazing. I want to repeat it. It is a 2 night canoeing trip down Lows Lake to the Oswegatchie River.

The plan is to leave NYC on thursday afternoon and drive to Tupper Lake. On the Friday morning we will go and rent the canoes or kayaks for this 3 day trip. The rentals should be around $80 to $100 per person. The canoe rental place for a fee will take care of shuttling our cars to the end of the trail. There will be two or three portages during this trip. We will drive back on Sunday evening to NY.

    Equipment:

    Headlamp

Two sets of clothes (one of the day and one for the night)

    Hat, gloves, fleece, warm jacket

    Tent (we can share tents)

    Sleeping bag and sleeping mat

Water proof bag or trash bags so that you clothes and food don't get wet.

    Stove (We can share)

    Who can come:

You must be fit enough to canoe or kayak about 10 miles each day. No one will canoe for you if your arms get tired. There will be a few beaver dams and portages that will require you to carry your canoe or kayak over.

This sounds like a great idea. I'll sign up for next one as thinking this isn't happening now.

This trip has a very long carry if we are doing the Oswegatchie. Unless you have a very lightweight canoe, you will need to rent a canoe. We are plannig on renting from raquette river canoes because they have 2 person kevlar boats that are relatively easy to carry. If we are not canoeing the Oswegatchie it is an entirely different story. In this case, kayaks and even an old refrigerator should be fine.

Kayaks are not really possible on this trip. There is quite a long carry, and we need to rent light weight canoes for this. Kayaks are much too cumbersome for the carry.

I'll be calling Anne at Raquette River canoes to check up on conditions as we get closer to this date. But fear not, global warming will likely work in our favor.

You are aware it might not be iced out yet?

Francisco - last time we put on the water on 3rd May. I recall there was a light frost on the tents overnight, but it was fine for paddling during the day.

No I am aware that it was about a week earlier than the last time. The temperatures during the day were great and the last day I remember it was in the 70s or 80s in the sun. We had morning frost one night at the campsite at the head of the river. I like morning frost anyhow.

Anyone have a car ride they can share? I will pay by fair share of expenses. Thanks.

Wasn't our trip down the Oswegatchie River a 4 day 3 night trip? Would be a tough 3 day trip with that long portage. I might be thinking of a different trip though.

    • Francisco

Oh yes, I remember now. We stayed a Lows then the Portage end then the river. Mike what do you think?

      March 16, 2013

  • mike p.

If you limit to 14 we should be good.

    March 16, 2013

    • Francisco

I am glad you are coming!!!! You are the canoeing expert. Hopefully the water levels are pretty high. I figure with this weather the water levels will be pretty high by the end although it didn't snow that much this year.

      March 16, 2013

  • mike p.

I have two canoes, so if we can get an extra car to my house we'll save on a rental.

    March 16, 2013

  • mike p.

Let's do it again. Water levels on above high falls need to be high enough. If not we should try lake Lila. I've never done that and its supposed to be very cool place. But francisco, may need, to break up into groups. The limit is 7 or 8 per site. So think about limiting attendance. They're pretty strict.

I'll need a ride from manhattan (or from anywhere off public transportation). Happy to contribute to gas, tolls, etc. costs.
