Jay peak is hosting a Ski Mountaineering Race. Ski Mountaineering Racing involves skinning up hill, boot packing, sometimes moderate climbing and then skiing back down all using alpine touring equipment. They are also offering a course which allows snowshoes, running or walking.
Plan is to drive up from the city Friday, compete in the race Saturday, do some lift served skiing Sunday and drive back. You can also join if you just want to go skiing at Jay peak.
Here are the details as Jay Peak describes them:
The Jay Peak Rando is taking one large step forward this winter. USSMA has sanctioned our course as a Category II, which means the course needs to be approximately 4000 ft vertical, 5 - 10 transitions, 50% off-piste, and under three hours winning time. The 2014 course will have ~4000' vertical, six transitions, two boot packs, along with multiple bump and off-piste climbs/descents.
The Dyna-FIT: If you have a randonee setup, altimeter and the stamina of a cheetah, this is the division for you. You must compete in this division to be eligible for the grand prize.
Entry Fee: $40
The Bushwacker: This is for folks whose only interaction with randonee is an afternoon skin on their alpine setup. We'll have an abridged course with a warm (or cold) apres beverage waiting for you at the finish. This division allows randonee, snowshoes, running, or walking.
Entry Fee: $20
The Grammy Jay: No, adults you can't compete. This one is for kids 14 and under and will be roughly one mile in length. This division is open to randonee, snowshoes, running and walking.
Entry Fee: $5
Transportation and Lodging:
We will carpool up on Friday and stay in a cheap hotel/motel. Details to be sorted when we are closer to the date.
