Lets backpack the Eastern half of the famous Pemi Loop in New Hampshire's White Mountains this 4th of July weekend. I've long been waiting to do this famous and beautiful trail but am not ambitious enough to try and bag all the peaks in one go so, upon a recommendation, I've decided to shave off some of the elevation. Instead of doing the highest (Western) peaks, we'll hike though the valley, past beautiful waterfalls, before going up to the ridge.
I plan to drive up late on Thursday night and camp near the Lincoln Woods trailhead in Lincoln, NH. I have reserved a campsite at Waterest Campground in Woodstock, NH, just 15 minutes away from the trailhead. The address is 11 Sugar Plum Ln. and they can be reached by phone at (603) 745-2586. You're welcome to try and reserve a site there for yourself or stay somewhere else nearby as long as you can make it to the trailhead by 9am.
On Friday, July 4th, we'll start to trek 11 mi North along Franconia Brook Trail to Twin Brook Trail and make camp at the campsites near the Galehead Hut. On day 2 we'll hike 12 mi East and South past South Twin Mtn. and Mt. Bond. We'll finish day 2 by camping out at the tent sites near Franconia Falls. On day 3 (Sunday), we'll finish off the hike with the remaining 3 miles back to the Lincoln Woods Trailhead and likely grab lunch somewhere nearby before heading home.
Day 1 will mostly be on flat ground in the valley, following the river. I'm hoping for abundant views of nearby waterfalls here. The final 3 miles of the day, however, we'll have to do a significant but steady climb to get to the campsite. Day 2 we'll mostly be following the ridge with obvious ups and downs in between the peaks. Be ready for unpredictable weather and high winds at this point on the trail. Campsite fees on the trail should be $8 so bring some cash. Parking at the trailhead is also a few dollars a day. On Thursday night, I'm hoping to get a campsite at Hancock Campground, next to the Lincoln Woods trailhead.
