Backpacking Mt. Greylock, Sunset/Full moon camping, visit MoCA & Bash Bish Falls

  • Aug 8, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In a nutshell, we will hike up Mt. Greylock (the highest peak in MA), watch sunset from the top, primitive backpacking camping under a full moon at a quiet non-car campsite, visit MASS MoCA museum, and will do a short hike at Bash Bish Falls on the way back. We will stay at a hike-in camp site on Fri and Sat nights.

Detailed Plan:

Day 1 Friday: We will drive to the trailhead parking lot for the campground on Friday night and hike-in ~2 miles into our campsite for next two nights. It is a hike-in campsite - meaning it is a car-free campsite and we will have to bring all our gear with us. The campsite I booked has a drinking water source, toilet, a brook, picnic table, and a lean-to (so if you don't have a tent, you can sleep in the lean-to). The campsite allows up to 12 ppl and has no shower facility.

Day 2 Saturday: We will wake up late, have breakfast, coffee, tea at the campsite, checkout a viewpoint from the campsite and then go hike Mount Greylock, the highest peak in MA, and explore the summit and some water falls on the way to the summit; the summit has a cafe. We will take the hike easy as I want to catch sunset from the top. We will then hike  back to our campsite and set up campfire, cook dinner, eat, chat under a full moon.

Day 3 Sunday: We will get up, pack out and hike back to the parking lot, pick up our cars, and go visit MASS MoCA museum. We will also get our breakfast. After the museum visit, we will start heading back to NYC and stop at Bash Bish Falls on MA side - it is the highest waterfall in MA and great destination for a short hike.

******************************************************

What to bring:

Headlamp, backpack (day-hiking and backpacking or something in between), sleeping bag, sleeping pad, non-cotton hiking clothes, socks, wind breaker, layers, hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, hat, sunglasses, tent, bathing suit, a small towel, toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrush, a roll of toilet paper, two breakfasts, one lunch (optional, summit has a cafe), one camp dinner, trail mix, energy bar, lightweight backpacking cooking stove, pot, fork, spoon.

The cost for the campsite will be roughly about $7 pp for two nights (final cost will depend on how many of us go).

******************************************************

Getting there:

We will carpool. Pls answer my RSVP questions fully - that way I can try to arrange carpooling for everyone.

Great job everyone on pushing yourself to do more than what was planned. Along with Mt Greylock, we did a total of 4 peaks yesterday, followed by a well deserved relaxing day today at the campground and then by the waterfall. Fun times at the dinner last night by the campfire with music, dance, ghost stories, laughter. Awesome team work!

  • Janine R.

Rumana, I will most likely get to the Sperry Campground trailhead in the mid afternoon and hike up to the campsite and then back down to the campground to meet everyone at 7 p.m. Is it the Chimney Group Area that we are hiking into or a different one? And are we hiking up the Jones Nose Trail to the summit on Saturday? Many thanks, Janine

    August 6, 2014

    • Rumana C.

Hi Janine, we are staying at the Chimney Group Area; 7 PM is an estimated arrival time as most of us are coming from NYC and surrounding so depends on traffic and ppl are also starting out at different time depending on work, etc. If you could get a fire started that would be great! You will have to buy the firewood from campground - we will reimburse you. Thanks! Planning to go up via AT and back via Overlook

      August 6, 2014

    • Janine R.

Hi Rumana, yes, happy to get the fire started. Just talked to the Mt Greylock people about ordering the wood, having it delivered, etc. Will light the fire around 7:30 so it will be going when people get there. Won't come down to the parking lot, then, as I want to be at Chimney Rock to light it.

Thanks! I have added more spots

      August 6, 2014

If your OK with supporting an overflow group, there are other group camp sites available.
The "Wait Listers" could procure another site.
Looks like today would be the last day to secure the campsite online; after that it would be walk-up only .
Let me know if anyone is interested.

    August 6, 2014

    • Rumana C.

Hi Wade, if you could get another campsite, I will add more spots to this trip. Lmk Thanks!
