SPECIAL EVENT: TOURNAMENT at SPiN

NYC Backgammon, University Club and others are invited to an inaugural Backgammon Tournament at SPiN. They will have a few boards on hand, but you should definitely bring your own if you hope to play (just like at our meetups).

There will be two levels; Tier 1 and Tier 2.  SPiN is contributing $25 Gift Certificates for winners of both levels.  Entrance fee will be $3 for Tier 1 and $5 for Tier 2, with optional $20 and $60 side pools (100% return) for Tier 2 for additional prize money.

Registration at 3pm, you must be on time to register.

Thanks for letting the weird, tattooed, bearded guy showcase his abismal cube skills. It was great to meet everyone and play/talk backgammon. A big thanks to Julia and Jim for running the tournament!

TOURNAMENT PLAY WAS ENJOYABLE ! IT MIGHT BE MORE INTERESTING IF IT WERE A 7 OR 9 POINT MATCH ( INSTEAD OF 5) FOR MAIN TOURNAMENT AND A 5 OR 7 POINT MATCH FOR LOSER'S TOURNAMANENT.

Agree with A.A. above. Five points is just too short. But BG should not be played like chess and clocks are essential. One hour should be plenty of time for 7 pts, most will not take that long. And a firm starting time of 2pm should do it.

BTW - good job for first time TD. No screaming was heard, no fistfights happened.

6 in Tier 1 (Beginner pre-intermed) and 14 in Tier 2 (Intermed/Advanced), plus 3 casual player/observers and two tournament directors (Jim Kennis and I). 1st time playing in a tournament for many, 1st time running one for Jim and I, a great experience all around. Many thanks to Bob Bieder for his advice and expertise.

Tournament at Spin provided a full day of cheap fun for all. Julia and Jim with the help of Bob(aka 3-3-lol) did a great job organizing and running it. I think that we should have 2 meetings at Spin per month.

Great location and good idea to have a tournament every so often ! It's 9:22pm and there are 7 folk still around :)
