Helmets are not required by NYC law, except for children.

I have not been on rides with any of these variants, so I can't answer myself.

Helmets and bells are required per NY law:

Cops do give tickets to bicyclists from time to time, even when it
doesn't apply. ��I don't want to have to wait up on you because some
cop is giving you a ticket for something that stupid.

I am more than happy to obey them. They don't seem that overboard to
me. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make in exchange for what has been
a fun group for me. ��If Garrett were to add more rules that changed
that balance for me, I would just leave and go to another group.
