Running a Lean Coffee

Preparation:

- Everyone create a name tag with a sticky notes.
- Create a Kanban board on the table with 4 columns: To Do, Doing, Done, Epiphanies.

Ideation:

- Everyone quietly write topics on stickies (3-5 words) and place them on the table. (3-5 minutes).
- Briefly introduce yourselves. (1-3 sentences per person).
- Briefly describes your topics, so the group can move on to dot voting. Combine duplicate topics (with permission). (15-30 seconds per topic).
- Dot vote: Everybody has 2 votes and can mark the stickies with a dot to vote. You can use both votes on one sticky or vote on 2 separate ones.
- Stack rank the topics in the backlog (To Do column) based on the order of most popular topics.

Discussion:

- Talk: Start a timer for 8 minutes and begin the first topic (place topic into the Doing column).
- Vote: When the timer goes off, Roman vote to decide whether to continue with the topic:

  • Thumb up - keep talking.
  • Thumb down - move on.
  • Thumb sideways - don't care.
  • If the majority wants to continue, start the timer for 4 minutes and continue.
  • When the timer goes off, vote again. If up-voted, continue for 2 minutes.
  • Repeat until topic is exhausted (then place topic into Done column).
  • Throughout discussions, participants jot down their personal "ahas" on stickies and place them under Epiphanies.
- Repeat: Move onto the next topic.

Wrap up:

- Quick round robin of favorite Epiphanies (taking a pass is an option too).
