Ruby & Rails for NYC Startup

West Hurley, NY
Post #: 1
Brightbox provides a secure, elegant mobile device charging station for everywhere people spend time out. We’re a plucky startup located in the Flat Iron district of New York City who is quickly maturing into the premier ubiquitous way to charge in venues across the US in hospitality, entertainment, healthcare, education, travel and retail.

We are looking for a well-rounded polyglot software developer that takes pride in their work. You should care about the quality of your code, perceive the aesthetics of it, understand the UI/UX, and know how your choices impact the business as a whole. You must be comfortable with the entire web stack and have experience in Ruby on Rails. You should be interesting, creative, and fun to work with.

You will initially be responsible for the internal analytics/monitoring portal and our client and support facing sites. Parts of your work will be centered on data analysis and transforming the metrics from our fully connected, remotely monitored charging stations into meaningful business tools. We're a small company and you'll be interfacing with people from every level. You will work with your fellow tech team members to enable new features in the software powering the Brightboxes and with sales and marketing to create (web-based) data visualization tools to analyze new business verticals and usage patterns.

  • Experienced in Ruby, Rails, Javascript, jQuery, SQL, CSS/HTML.
  • Knowledge of Heroku, PostgreSQL, Delayed Job/Resque/Sidekiq.
  • Understanding of responsive web design.
  • Attention to detail and the persistence for completing the last 20% of a task.
  • The ability to assimilate new technologies/libraries quickly, evaluate their fitness and use in supporting our business objectives, and cleanly integrate them.
  • Experience and discipline in solving open-ended problems with deadlines, and making reasonable tradeoffs without accumulating mountains of technical debt.
  • Basic knowledge of Git (or equivalent SCM) and a reliable branching model (git flow)
  • Must be interested in doing cool things with our very cool product (and the data generated from it).

  • Familiarity with Linux and the command line
  • Understanding of NoSQL technologies (Redis, MongoDB, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of AWS EC2
  • Exposure to Python programming
  • Experience with Javascript-based visualization/graphing: Highcharts, D3.js, Google Charts, JSCharts, or equivalent
  • iPhone or Android app development

We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package and flexible working environment out of our NYC office.
