• Discuss Climate Change: Social Dinner

    Midtown Diner

We'll be meeting in a diner to discuss various aspects of climate change. We will discuss a bill in congress, HR 763, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, https://energyinnovationact.org/ , but it's a pretty simple bill, which should leave us with plenty of time to discuss other things that people want to talk about. The restaurant has a huge menu, does separate checks, and takes credit cards. Everyone will pay for their own meal.

  • Different Proposals For Dealing With Climate Change

Tonight, we'll be discussing various proposals for dealing with climate change, including - Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-NY / Sunrise's "Green New Deal" - Rep. Matt Gaetz R-FL's "Green Real Deal" - Typical Liberal Approach to a Carbon Tax - Typical Conservative Approach to a Carbon Tax - "Carbon Fee & Dividend" -- Citizens Climate Lobby and Climate Leadership Council - "Cap & Trade" The Economist Magazine, which believes that global warming is real and that urgent action is justified, described AOC's GND as "A hallucination masquerading as legislation". Nancy Pelosi, who also agrees that global warming is a real and urgent problem, described as "The Green Dream, or whatever -- nobody knows what's in it, but everybody's for it.". The biggest problem with the "Green New Deal" is that not only is 80% of it COMPLETELY unrelated to, and unnecessary for, solving climate change, but that 80% includes MANY things that are very radical and that would have great difficulty passing as separate bills in any political climate that is likely to occur soon. In its current incarnation, the text of the Green New Deal discusses: - health care reform - wage stagnation - deindustrialization - strengthening trade unions - income inequality - race - gender - indigenous peoples - homelessness - the disabled - infrastructure - education, including higher education - a job guarantee at a wage much higher than current minimum wage - "economic security" - whatever that means Text of current AOC / Sunrise GND proposal: http://tinyurl.com/y54exovj Climate Activist Jerry Taylor, who formed the pro-climate action Niskanen Center, on how the Green New Deal will probably do more harm than good: http://tinyurl.com/y35jjayo Rep. Matt Gaetz R-FL has a Republican proposal, the "Green Real Deal", you can read the text of the resolution here: http://tinyurl.com/yy7a4dht . Unlike AOC's GND, it embraces nuclear and carbon capture and sequestionstration. While it's nice to see a conservative interested in climate action, and it's especially nice that it is ENTIRELY focused on climate change, the Green Real Deal is hard to take seriously since it doesn't propose ANY negative consequence for people who want to emit a lot of CO2. Then we'll talk about typical liberal and conservative approaches to a carbon tax. We'll talk about "Carbon Fee and Dividend", promoted by the bipartisan Citizens Climate Lobby and the Republican Climate Leadership Council. http://tinyurl.com/y8v8qneh And finally, we'll talk about "Cap and Trade". Free pizza will be served.
