Monthly Meetup (Surviving the Heat!)

  • Aug 6, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This meetup is held the first Tuesday of each month and has two purposes.

Firstly, it serves as a general networking opportunity for Permies in the area to meet each other and to provide mutual aid. What are you struggling with that you need help with? What is everyone working on and where? Who is available to help each other with projects?

Secondly, this is an information session to increase knowledge about all facets of permaculture from farming practices, to economic systems, and community building. This month's theme will be "How to Survive and Thrive in Heat Waves." We'll be looking at what we can do to make sure our plants, animals, and neighbors make it through the summer safely--and what can be done to make NYC more resilient in a warmer future.

*A $5 donation will be optional for our meetups. Proceeds help sponsor PDC students, establish and maintain demonstration sites, purchase land for a land trust network, and other sustainable culture educational projects in the Northeast. The PayPal link sends a donation to Green Phoenix Permaculture, a 501c3 organization.*

I've uploaded the document with the facts and figures I presented and their website sources as a file on the site. "Heat Waves 2" http://www.meetup.com/nycpermaculture/files/

This was really a great discussion--I can't believe we were still there till 10:30!!! Thanks to everyone that attended, and especially SirRoan for providing so much information about Earthships and how they could be used in a hotter world. It was great to see so many new faces, the ideas were really flowing!

My topic for discussion this month is: How to Cope with Heat Waves. I'd like to give about a 10-min presentation on the history of and problems associated with heat waves, and then open discussion for your suggestions on how to care for our plants and neighbors in such circumstances. I am particularly concerned about the deadly effects such prolonged periods of heat can have on the poor and elderly who may not have access to air conditioners; and how cities will cope in the near future when rising fuel costs make cool air a luxury out of reach even for the dwindling middle class.

great topic! i will try my best to come, whole foods is only a few blocks from where i live, but had a bike accident on friday. I really like this topic. note that it's not just heat but the decreased oxygen/increased ozone levels. i'm feeling like "someone should invent wearable living plants" :-)

I need to back out of this one in spite of my intention to be a regular. Once I recover a bit more from a bike accident I'll be back!
