Hi all, hope you are staying cool in this crazy weather!

Members of the Brooklyn Food Coalition's Prospect Heights/Crown Heights neighborhood group will be meeting next this coming Wednesday June 27 at 7pm at Duryea Presbyterian Church, 362 Sterling Place, at the corner of Sterling and Underhill.

We are planning a "Healthy Fair" that we are co-sponsoring with the Church, to take place on Saturday September 15, 2012.  The fair will include medical screenings, food and nutrition workshops, urban agriculture demonstrations, children's activities related to the above, and music!  Pastor Ted Hickman in working with the relevant block association to close Underhill between Sterling and St. John's to traffic that day, so we can take over the street...

I participated in a call with Pastor Ted and 2 of his colleagues from NYU, who will lead the medical screenings to be done at the fair (blood pressure, etc.)  Together we want to produce a community event where people can learn more about the relationship between food/diet/exercise and how food that's good for you can be tasty, and you can grow it yourself!  Pastor Ted has spoken with folks from PS 9, and they will be sending a representative to our meeting on Wednesday.  (They want to do a whole curriculum in September around health and nutrition.)  I've been in touch with Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and they are interested in participating in some way.

Does anyone have contacts at community gardens in our neighborhood?  They should be invited to participate, too.

Feel free to invite anyone interested in participating in planning and organizing the fair.  And bring all your ideas for who we should reach out to, and what we should do there.  Hope to see you at the meeting!  Please let me know if you can make it.

Best,
Fran Miller
