Subject: Volunteer form for waste audit

Everyday New York’s hauling industry exports about 12,000 tons of commercial trash for landfill or waste to energy purposes.  Organic material makes up approximately 35% of the commercial waste stream, very little of which is recovered for compost or other beneficial re-use.  One of the best opportunities to divert this material from the landfill is in the industrial food manufacturing sector.  While the number of manufacturing firms in NYC has decreased over the years, data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics show an 11% increase in the number of food and beverage manufacturers between 2008 and 2012.  We are excited to announce that we have been granted an opportunity to take a shot at diverting a significant amount of this waste towards re-use at the Pfizer building, a home for many up and coming food manufacturers.

Our first step to divert his material is to understand how much and what types of material is being generated at this site.  To do this we will be conducting a comprehensive waste study on July 14^th and 16^th.  Both days we will be on site from 5am to 11pm to guarantee an accurate assessment of the waste.  This is a large initiative and could potentially have meaningful implications for other industrial sites around the city.  In order to complete this project we need help, your help!  Join us by signing up for a 3 hour shift on either one or both days to help ensure that the material coming out of Pfizer is recovered properly.
