Juneteenth in San Jose featuring Chrisette Michele

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

The AACSA is a non-profit organization founded in 1978. Since 1979, it has been centrally located in San Jose at 6th and Julian Street. To best respond to the needs of the African American community, we administer varied programs geared to youth, seniors, and the general community. The programs include: Inez Jackson Research Library, Youth Development Activities, Sunday Homeless Breakfast (in collaboration with the Korean Baptist Church), Holiday Luncheon for Seniors and Christmas Toys for tots and many others.

This is the Agency's 32nd year sponsoring the Juneteenth Festival in San Jose. Over the 32 years, the Bay Area Juneteenth has average over 10,000 people and entertainment has ranged from artist like Case, Jaguar Wright, Jon B., Reuben Studdard to groups like the Drifters with a wide range of local artists from Rap/Hip Hop to R&B, Gospel and Jazz. A wide variety of food, art work, retailers, community services and local business has always been a major drawing card for the event. Our festivals has always embrace educating the community on a diversity of information ranging from health to educational and financial wealth. We are a family-oriented festival with a variety of activities suitable for all ages.

    ~*.. Hi there, everyone!

Last year, to me, San Jose's was the BEST Juneteenth Festival EVER!! -- I have been going since 1972 (not a new festival at all, folks ~ I first attended in Milwaukee, WI) and have never had such a great time like at last year's in San Jose.

At first, I was just a vendor there from 1998 to 2010 getting great exposure for my business, but now I am a volunteer...loving it!!

We can use MAAANY more volunteers this year. This is also a good place for your high school children to get in their community services hours due to this being a non-profit organization's event. We are also still accepting vendors & entertainers.

If you are available, please give us a call at the festival's office at 408. 292. 3157 -- or call my group at 408. 978. 5176 for a volunteer application to be emailed to you...I'd love to add you to my particular team.

    Thanks much,

    Valire :)
