Onyx Book Club and Soul food Potluck in Redwood City

  • Jul 18, 2010 · 7:00 PM

The
last book club was really great so I'd figured I'd host another one. This time around, let's read "The Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison. Invisible Man is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, an unnamed African American man who considers himself socially invisible. His character may have been inspired by Ellison's own life. The narrator may be conscious of his audience, writing as a way to make himself visible to mainstream culture; the book is structured as if it were the narrator's autobiography although it begins in the middle of his life. The story is told from the narrator's present, looking back into his past. Thus, the narrator has hindsight in how his story is told, as he is already aware of the outcome. Like last time, the book club will be a soul food potluck as well so please bring something tasty to share with the group. Or drinks. Bonus points for anyone with a key lime pie hook up.

It was a good gathering...I wish I had finished the book. The discussion was excellent and the food was good too :). I wonder what happened to the 16 people that didn't make it?
