Happy Friday, Onyx!
Just wanted to hit you with a quick email today letting you know about some things that are coming down the pipeline. They're listed in the subject line, but just a sentence or 2 of detail on each.
First off, holiday season is upon us and that means food, days off, and you East coasters get to break out your cold weather gear and get a taste of home! I'm a tropical person myself, so you'll see me dipping into my sweater collection quick!Halloween:
First up is Halloween. I believe Sabine has a party on the 31st that she has invited Onyx to, and the details will be up shortly. Holiday Dinners:
In November in December, I'm planning TWO (yes, two) Onyx Dinners! One will be a traditional Thanksgiving dinner
-- turkey, stuffing, greens, cornbread, ham...yams... sometime BEFORE Thanksgiving day (maybe 1 or 2 days before). The next event will be an unprecedented first annual Onyx African Holiday Dinner
! Yes, we gots Africans in the group who can get down with the down home food, and there's no better time for us to see what they're working with. Here's the best part -- it will be FULLY CATERED! Onyx member Sade will be doing the honors, bringing in her expertise of Nigerian
cuisine and I'm planning on capping the event at 25-30 people. My goal is to keep the cost low (maybe around $20-$25 per person) and we'll be working on a menu in the next few weeks. This event is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 12th. As we learned from our last Soul Food Saturday event, when this event hits the calendar, you better RSVP quick. Also, start thinking about Nigerian or other African dishes you would like served, so I can customize the menu for us!Soul in the Snow 2009
Last years Tahoe trip was an absolute blast. We rented a HUGE luxury cabin for 16 people, had 2 prepared meals, lots of drinks, and spent a whole day on the mountain (or at the lodge!), then hit up the night life. This all cost about $80 per person after the deposit was refunded. One lesson we took from the trip is we need to start planning EARLIER. This year, we'll be picking the dates over the next couple months, locking our cabin down, and planning the itinerary hopefully by January. Also, this year, we'll be collecting the money in deposits to keep flaking to minimum! This will probably be in 2 payments. If you have suggestions for a weekend to go, please email me, and I will post a poll. We went in March last year, but there are various black ski events in the snow, so if you prefer that, don't be shy. Stay posted for more information.Non-Profit:
Lakeisha, myself, and a few others met last Saturday and came up with the mission statement for our upcoming Onyx non-profit arm! Here's the first draft: "Empowering the Black community in the Bay Area through projects focused on volunteerism, education and professional development.
" Tonight and tomorrow, we'll be at a non profit bootcamp learning all the ins and outs of getting this up and running. If you'd like to be part of this, reply to me or Lakeisha. Friday Discussion Article:
Finally, I just posted an article for discussion entitled "The Black Family: 40 Years of Lies" on our message board. http://www.meetup.com/onyx-black-professionals/messages/boards/thread/5618514
Just some food for thought if you get time this Friday.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, and we'll see you at something soon.
Your faithful Onxy Co-Organizers,
JG & Lakeisha
