How to find us

This Wednesday we will meet at our biolab at MakerLabs. At the front entrance just say you are going upstairs to OSN and take the east stairs up, we are right around the corner at the top to the right.

Today, we will cover the basics of DNA gel electrophoresis, the process of separating fragments of DNA on an agarose gel by size. This is one of the most basic techniques in molecular biology, and one that all self-respecting biohackers should be well-versed in.

In this session we will be learning i) how to make an agarose gel, ii) how to prepare DNA samples for running on the gel, iii) using a DNA ladder, iv) loading samples on the gel & running them as well as visualizing the DNA in the gel documentation system.

This technique is so basic and important that, without it, no DNA based science could have been done. This technique has been used to verify Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results, map genomic regions using Southern Blotting, clone DNA fragments from one source to a plasmid, to name a few applications.

We will touch on the difference between DNA gel electrophoresis, RNA gel electrophoresis and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for studying proteins.

This is a FREE HANDS ON WORKSHOP. Due to space constraints we are limiting it to 8 people maximum. If you RSVP yes but find you can't make it please change your RSVP to allow anyone on the wait list. PLEASE BE ON TIME since we are covering a lot of material.

Conceived in the spirit of the VHS's open nights, Open Lab Wednesdays are an opportunity to connect with the lab, meet the people working on project, bring whatever your working on, whatever ideas you have, to an informal meet'n'greet at our lab. Member's are often present doing PCR, pipetting enzymes, having fun. Some Open Lab Wednesdays will have a speaker present a topic of interest to the community or a workshop/demonstration. If you would like to do a talk please email us your ideas at info at opensciencenet dot com. Don't forget to signup on our mailing list (http://www.opensciencenet.org).

There are no requirements for these meetups, just come yourself, meet anyone and everyone involved, learn about potential projects, propose your own, and see our lab as it has evolved until now!
