Hi Everyone,

So three people (Michael, Ray, and myself) made the 3pm last-minute meeting today. The next meeting will be Monday February 15 at 6:30pm. We thought it would be more convenient for everyone if it can be held in downtown (more central) rather than out in Point Grey. This would also encourage more people from say SFU/BCIT or non-students from Burnaby/Surrey to come out. Michael volunteered his building's rec room (out by the Granville Skytrain station), which he could rent for ~$20.

Here's a run-down of what we talked about during our informal discussion today:

* Introductions (our backgrounds, and what brought us to DIYbio)

* A brainstorm about which social media outlet would be most appropriate/efficient to connect all of us Vancouver DIYbio folks (Facebook vs this GoogleGroup vs a LinkedIn group vs MeetUp vs W2). We know this googlegroup has had problems with spam in the past. MeetUp and Facebook both allow us to set up events/meetings where people could RSVP, however Facebook might be too personal, whereas MeetUp is yet another thing to join. A LinkedIn group would allow us to post questions/comments to a forum, but the feel of LinkedIn might seem excessively professional for our purposes. W2 leans towards the artistic/social activist audience, which could be a plus. The consensus amongst the three of us is that we would like something that we don't have to go out of our way to check, and could deliver invitations/notices to our email inboxes. Further discussion on what people prefer will be at the next meeting.

* All three of us thought it would be really great for a big meeting for all DIYbio-Vancouver people to attend, so we could meet everyone, and find out what everyone is interested in. Hopefully we can have a good turnout at the next meeting, on Monday the 15th. This way people with common interests can meet and organize their own little groups in the future.

* We want to put the question out there: Will meeting Monday evenings (say once every 2 or 3 weeks) in downtown work well for everyone? Is there a preferred day of the week/time of the day/part of town?

Thanks everyone!
