Discussion: Individualism and Community

Around the time of the 16th century, a rise in the concept of the individual began.  Out of this shift in thinking arose movements such as the Protestant Reformation and the Age of Enlightenment.

Contrast that with Eastern cultures such as Japan in which decisions are made primarily regarding the group/community and sometimes the individual is completely overlooked.

What is the ideal mentality?  What have we to gain from an increase in community focus?  What have we to lose by focusing less on the individual?  And lastly, how does this tie into our spirituality?

two comments made by a friend last night when I was discussing our discussion with him online......."shameless selfishness is not quite the same as individualism" and "conformity is neither the same as community"........sure makes me wish he was in town more often so he could attend these discussions.....I think he'd be a definite contributor

Fascinating! I will get off work at 6, so I will be late, but try to attend this one. I was a philosophy major/history minor in college, and do love topics such as this:)

Really sorry to miss seeing and hearing from you all again this time, but my niece and her young family will be in town on their way to moving to Chile for the dad to work in the wind-energy industry. I look forward to reconnecting in two weeks. ~ Cynthia
