OpenFlow/SDN hands-on tutorial

For this event we will be hosting Srini Seetharaman from Deustche Telekom, Xin Huang from CYAN, Inc. & Sriram Natarajan from NTT Innovation Institute Inc. They will do Tech Talk on OpenFlow/SDN and follow it with a hands on tutorial for building applications using Ryu controller.

About Srini Seetharaman

Srini Seetharaman is the Technical Lead for Software-defined Networking (SDN) at Deutsche Telekom Innovation Laboratories. Previously he was a member of the OpenFlow/SDN team at Stanford, between[masked], where he lead the SDN deployments in several nation-wide campus enterprise networks, including Stanford. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

About Xin Huang

Xin Huang is a Senior Research Scientist / Technologist at CYAN, a leading SDN company. Previously she was a Senior Research Scientist at Deutsche Telekom Innovation Laboratories. Xin has been working on Openflow/SDN since year 2009, and has designed, developed, and evaluated several Openflow-based SDN solutions. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

About Sriram Natarajan

Sriram Natarajan is a Senior Researcher at NTT Innovation Institute Inc. He researches on security issues within the SDN architecture and develops applications on-top of RYU controller. Perviously, he has  built several network services using OpenFlow/SDN (flow conflict detection system, network visualization tool, and network security applications). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst

I set up a VM as per the tutorial, but I can't ssh into it. My experience with other linuxes (Fedora, at least) under Virtual Box has been that after you enable host-only networking on a second adapter, I've had to edit system network configuration files to let the OS know what the generated MAC address of the second network adapter is in order for the network interface to work. (This also requires restarting the network service to pick up the change.) I'm not familiar with Ubuntu, but I'm guessing we need to do something similar to make ssh work. Can anyone tell us how to do that?

    • Xin H.

first, in the VM: ifconfig, check whether there is eth1 and whether there is an IP assigned to this interface.. if not, $sudo dhclient eth1.. you will then get the eth1 and its ip. Then, check the following files in VM: 1) /etc/ssh/ssh_config: ForwardAgent yes; ForwardX11 yes; ForwardX11Trusted yes 2) /etc/ssh/sshd_config: X11Forwarding yes ; X11DisplayOffset 10; X11UseLocalhost no; After this, you should be able to ssh -X into the VM from host.

Chris, the network config file is /etc/network/interfaces. You can add auto eth1
      iface eth1 inet dhcp

    Folks,
To best use the time at the tutorial session please have your laptop's setup with the virtualalization software of your choice (like Virtualbox), install the VM from http://people.valinux.co.jp/~yamahata/ryu/openflow-tutorial/OpenFlow_Tutorial_Ryu-ovf.zip
and make sure you are able to log into it with user-name "ryu" and password "ryu".

We'll be following the tutorial at: https://github.com/osrg/ryu/wiki/OpenFlow_Tutorial

    Thanks,
    nVirters Team.

Windows users: If you are having trouble spawning xterm's then try add "AddressFamily inet" to /etc/ssh/sshd_config in the VM instance and reboot the VM.
    Or
Restart Xming with "No Access control" checkbox enabled.

While doing iperf at user space switch it's just keep telling "waiting for iperf to start up... " waited for more than 40 minutes.

Confirmation, there is problem in using user space switch. We will be using only the kernel switch (ovsk) for the workshop.

I am really interested in seeing how controller side is architectured when application based + regular networking requirements are getting involved at the controller.
