Organizers of the San Diego County Fair are planning to have
elephant rides provided by the company Have Trunk Will Travel
(HTWT), despite evidence that the company abuses elephants. In
video footage [
http://vimeo.com/23564589] recently released by
Animal Defenders International, trainers with HTWT can be seen
forcing elephants to "perform" by shocking them with electric prods
in the belly and genital area and striking them with
weapons resembling fireplace pokers that can leave painful welts,
abscesses, and puncture wounds on elephants' sensitive skin.
In response to this, we've organized a protest of the fair
this Sunday. Here are the details:
What: Protest against cruel elephant rides
When: Sunday, June 12, 11:45 a.m.–1 p.m. (You're
encouraged to stay for as long as you can.)
Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del
Mar (Please meet at the intersection of Jimmy Durante Boulevard and
Via De La Valle; see this map.) [
RSVP here on Facebook or if you have questions, please call
Ronnie at[masked]-5566. All materials will be provided.
If you can't attend the protest, please take a moment to
write to Rebecca Desmond, acting director of the Division of Fairs
and Expositions, and Barry Nussbaum, president of the Board of
Directors for the 22nd District Agricultural Association, to urge
them to immediately suspend the elephant rides at the San Diego
County Fair while fair staff conduct an internal investigation.

Thanks for all that you do for animals!
