Bananas! controversial documentary at MSPIFF

Dole Co. attempted to stop screenings of this film at the Los Angeles and other film festivals. One-third of the cost of conventionally grown bananas is the cost of pesticides. All over the world, banana plantation workers are suffering and dying from the effects of these pesticides, asserts the film--cancer, kidney failure, sterility. The legal battle is over Dole's continued use of the pesticide Nemagon, a chemical compound banned in the U.S. since 1979, in Nicaragua. Using interviews and court trial transcripts, the director (Fredrik Gertten, from Sweden) reveals facts behind the ground-breaking case, which may determine how multinational businesses treat workers in the future. Showing in the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF.) Presented courtesy Seward Co-op, and Peace Coffee. Shown with Big River, which is about pollution of the Mississippi River. Total running time 110 min. $10 (student with valid ID $8, age 62+ $8, MN Film Arts member $8) Tickets may be purchased online, or--if some remain--at the box office.
