April 11 and 12? This way it would be part of the US wide #mapathon series http://openstreetmap.us/2015/01/2015-mapathons/

What about mapping trees planted as part of the NYC one-in-a-million planting initiative. If not already done. Use the map to help record/track their health over time.

Quick background on me: I'm a tree lover and support neighborhood groups to map trees all over NYC and New Orleans. I also love OSM. That said, I'm not sure that potential street tree locations are appropriate for OSM. Two reasons why i think this: 1) there is an existing system through 311 for requesting street trees; 2) OSM is for existing data, not desired, proposed, or requested data. I would be happy to hold a TreeKIT mapping party through OSM which takes an inventory of trees currently on the street. We capture the length/width of treebeds, the tree diameter, and tree species. This initiative is a NSF-supported and Department of Parks and Rec-supported "ground-truthing" initiative that complements NYC's lidar-derived tree canopy, so you can be sure your data will be public and put to good use.

This sounds like a good idea, what parts of the city need tree data?

Hey! Tree-lover here and co-organizer of TreeKIT. Love the idea. Wanted to clarify? Are you interested in mapping possible future locations trees where there are none now?
