Wednesday hike at Sandy Hook
Details
Sandy Hook
The plan is to do a mostly brisk, approximately 6 miles, on the historic barrier peninsula, Sandy Hook. Lots of natural areas. Well known to birders and naturalists. We may see seals!!
Directions: From the Sandy Hook Front Gate, (on Hartshorne Dr) go about 4 miles on the main road, keeping straight on the Bay (left) side - No Turns. Just a bit past the 4 mile point, you will see a fork in the road, And a sign "Fort Hancock Historical Post" with a white Nike Missile (Pictured) pointed vertically, behind the sign. Turn right at that fork (Magruder Rd.) and go a few hundred feet, then Turn Left Into The Parking Lot. We will meet near the roof-covered picnic tables at the rear of the parking lot. There’s a restroom nearby. The walk will be on a variety of paved and unpaved trails: historical buildings, water views, old military sites, natural areas, elevated overlooks, a lighthouse. The trails here have minor uneven terrain, a few shorter sections of sand. Hiking boots/shoes are suggested. Poles, only if you think you’ll need them. Things to bring: Water, bug spray, sun protection. Hold onto your hats - Winds can be very gusty here! Please arrive at least a few minutes early: To sign in, gear up, use restroom, meet others, hear safety talk, etc. I’ll be next to my White Subaru Crosstrek, with black roof and kayak rack.
