Yet Another OSL First-Time Destination Hike

C'mon out for a fun first-time hike at a Minnesota State Park known for some very pretty whitewater. There are 10 miles of Trails here, and I am thinking about getting 3 quarters of that done with a few scenic overlooks included.

Its said that there are Bald Eagles year-round at this park, and this time of year we might likely see some colorful Turkeys also!

*** As always you DO NOT have to RSVP NO. ***

Plan to dress for a beautiful cool Sunny afternoon! I have put in my request and we'll see how that goes. Just the same, I plan to do some additional exploring in this park as it is home to a small cave system. Any hikers with a Speleological interest comment with your RSVP so I know. Plan for caving will be to go before the hike.

DIRECTIONS:

Whitewater State Park is located East of Rochester and West of Winona.

US 52 OR US 63 South to SR 42 South

OR

US 61 South to SR 42 South

To CR 2/39 East to SR 74 South

Weather was fantastic!!!!! As forcasted, the wet muck lifted and we had beautiful sunshine, upper 60'/ low 70's and a wonderful breeze on Nov 10.

Well everyone, if Saturday is anything like today I say we will have a great afternoon. However, I am not in the business of guaranteeing weather. What I can tell you is we have a great group of people, some of you already have been out with me, and this park offers enough things to be worth the trip. The forecast is dry, overcast, with clouds / cool weather until Saturday morning. I don't particularly get motivated to hike in rain these days, so if there is down pouring rain expect to get an update with a new Meetup option like IMAX or an Art Gallery before we depart

However, if there is lite mist or just dampness in the air / on the ground, I plan to keep the hike scheduled. Everyone will receive an email, and I will post a comment here before Saturday should there be any further weirdness that might make for a less than ideal outing. Dress for a cooler afternoon with 2-3 layers to keep in your body heat. I suggest boots that go over ankle. Bring water and snack

When I have gone on hikes here with other meetup groups, it seems many always take the long way around to the park. The shortest way from the TC area is to take Hwy 52 to the Oronoco exit (Hwy 12) past Pine Island. Head East on this road which is also named Hwy 247, Cty Rd 8 and Hwy 30 at times. You will pass straight through Plainview. About 7-8 miles after the stop sign in Plainview you will meet Hwy 74. No stop sign, just gravel road to the left and blacktop to the right as you near the Whitewater River. Turn right (South) on Hwy 74 and you will be in the park about 11 miles down the road.
As you pass through Elba look to the left and up to the top of the bluff to see the old fire tower. If the Whitewater hills aren't enough exercise it is about 650 steps up the bluff to the bottom of the tower, then the stairs to climb up the 110 foot tower. But great views and you can get a cell signal from up there!

Dave - I won't have access to a computer after 12:00 noon on Friday. Would you mind calling or texting me if the plans change? I see by the forecast there may be rain on Saturday. [masked]-0690. Thanks!!

Just a note for you last minute planners. There is almost no cell service in the park, only from a couple of the peaks. So don't plan on calling anyone already at the park for directions or late arival info.

Thanks Dave - That's correct, cell coverage is next to nil at the park. Please everyone do your best to be one time or early!

Mike - my apologies for the inconvenient change of my Meetup and its affect on your plans. Should you decide to go it alone, you'll enjoy what this park offers I assure you. Moreover, Everyone - feel free to jam up this page with your interest in joining Mike and going ahead with an informal outing. I have met several of you already but obviously not everyone, so go ahead as originally planned and Post your comments here. I am here to offer any advice and words of encouragement. For those who have met me once or twice you have a good idea about how I operate.

    Dave,
I’m extremely disappointed in the change of date this late in the week. I’ve scheduled my entire weekend around this hike and a visit to see my son in Winona for an evening along with lodging. Please think of how people schedule their weekends well in advance before changing dates again!!!

I've changed the date of this hike so everyone can enjoy the Corn Maze hike Sue rescheduled. I've been to this hike, and agree with Josh. My route crosses the river, climbs to Coyote Peak, and crosses the park to Chimney Peak. It's a fun, challenging hike. My route is over 3 miles and I finished in reasonable time after making a cup of tea and having a chat with Rusty.

Wish I could make it to this one, Dave. Unfortunately, I have a wedding to go to. Whitewater is a nice park. I was able to do the full loop in around 3hrs. If you find time, there is a faint trail on the opposite of the driveway from the gift shop that leads up the little bluff next to the gift shop. Atop the bluff is a cool area where I scared up a couple of deer about this time last year. Have fun!

The trip to this park has a few addl country-road turns, so if yall can talk up your interest in carpooling as we get closer to 10/20 I think that'll be great. Yes - Dogs allowed, Yes - Rusty be my boy. Bringing your pups, then plan for water down & back as well as some food, and water for the hike. As always, Depending on interest we might start talking about getting a bite to eat afterward. Thank you --
