Discussion: Confronting History – Nitram and Bran Nue Dae
Details
Join us to discuss Nitram by Justin Kurzel and Bran Nue Dae by Rachel Perkins, two Australian films that confront historical national traumas through starkly different lenses: one a chilling psychological examination of violence, the other a vibrant, musical reclamation of identity.
Nitram (2021, Justin Kurzel): A character study that attempts to understand the lead-up to the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, making viewers confront the isolation and societal failures that precede a national tragedy.
Bran Nue Dae (2009, Rachel Perkins): A jubilant, irreverent musical road movie that subverts historical trauma by celebrating Indigenous resilience, culture, and connection through song, dance, and humor.
