See "Sunshine on Leith", a joint event with the Gigs Group, Monday October 14th

  • Oct 14, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Odeon Cinema

Meet 5.45pm in the foyer of Odeon George St, Oxford, Monday 14 Oct, for the 6pm showing. After the film, those who want to will go for drinks/coffee somewhere in George St. Hope you can make it!

Half-way between a movie thing, and a gigs thing?! Well, it is a film, but there will be singing!
SUNSHINE ON LEITH is based on the sensational stage hit of the same name, featuring music by identical twins Scottish pop-folk band The Proclaimers. If you haven't heard of, or heard them, that's a reason to come in itself - whatever your view, they are an experience!! - the boys sing in broad Scottish accents, and the songs are cheery and emotive (East coast accents, Fife-Edinburgh): http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/going-the-distance-the-proclaimers-on-25-years-of-singalongs-staying-true-to-their-roots-and-proving-the-doubters-wrong-8701466.html

The film (with Proclaimers music in it) follows the stories of ex-squaddies Davy (George MacKay, PRIVATE PEACEFUL) and Ally (Kevin Guthrie), who have to relearn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming home from serving in Afghanistan. They struggle to live a life outside the army and to deal with the everyday problems of family, jobs and relationships.

Previously better known as a charismatic and engaging actor, director (and BUGSY MALONE alumnus) Dexter Fletcher imaginatively reinvents the genre of urban social realism in this heartwarming, upbeat musical, which boasts spectacular song and dance on the streets of Edinburgh and a top-notch cast.

Due for release on 4 October, watch this space for a date when the Phoenix will show it.

This event will be a shared event with the Oxford Gigs Group.

I had a great time. Good fun, great songs, singing and dancing in the sunshine of Edinburgh, beautiful cityscapes by day and by night. For me, nothing not to like.

Peter - having just looked at the booking page, I can confirm that the place is pretty empty :( Think you'll be able to move with no problem!

Oh that's a shame, Helen! Our numbers are dwindling, and will it be only me and Anne hollering along to the Proclaimers songs?! We hope to see you at something else soon. All the best xxx

I'm still coming, and I managed to get a seat next to you (I'm worried I might regret this - I have a low embarrassment threshold :-) ) but it will be lovely to see gorgeous edinburgh again, regardless of my blushing!

I think there's still three coming from the Gigs Group, so we'll still be a respectable number... Haven't booked any seats yet but there are still lots on the row behind you, so hopefully we'll be able to sing in your ears :)

I am afraid I cant make it either as would not get there in time from work.

Sorry to hear that! I am afraid there was no later showing in town...sadly I don't think the film is as popular here as in Scotland where I am told it is showing a LOT!

I've just looked at my bank account and the cupboard is looking decidedly bare, so I'm going to give this a miss. Hope to catch up soon!

Just to say I've booked my tickets for this and it is assigned seating ie you need to choose a particular seat. A couple of other folks asked me to book for them so we would at least start a group/sit together so I've done this and have 4 tickets for row H going in from the aisle on the left hand side as the seating plan appears on Odeon website. If others want to book to sit in a group anywhere around there is where we will be! See you at 5.45 tomorrow.

Just to say: sorry to anyone who cant make this date/time, but Anna (Gigs group organizer!) and I had trouble finding a suitable time and showing time for this film. It disappeared from the Phoenix's website and is only on at limited times eg in Odeon, or the Vue (latter difficult to get to cos of need for car). So we went for what was available. Please do post up a second viewing/MeetUp if anyone fancies it.

Update: I think we are hoping to see this film, if we can, towards the start of the week beginning 14 Oct, ie week after next. Watch this space, especially when film times are available later this coming week.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the area, and to the Movie Fans group! Hope to meet you soon. I am also from Scotland, but hardly a village in my case - Grangemouth - home of oil refinery perhaps soon to go on strike! (v. scenic there. Well, if you like cooling towers, giant flare stacks, other noisy and pollutey oil refinery things...! - at night you can see it for about 20 miles around as its all gloriously lit up - it does look pretty good then actually!) I've been down here a long time though.

Lets see once film times go up for this film re when we might be able to schedule it.

Its actually got worse...now I've downloaded 2 early Proclaimers ALBUMS! And a bunch of school chums on Facebook are posting photies of us all of around that time - on a Smiths pilgrimage to Manchester amongst other things....I think I should quit the online world for tonite while I am ahead!

    • Julie

Indeed....though they do have their disadvantages...eg I got so back into them at the weekend, I had them on in the car on way to work, then got to work, got out of car, still singing...and belted out "I know I'm gonna be...I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to YOUUUUU!" in the direction (inadvertently!!) of some pretty confused colleagues....

Ha.. you've just gotta love 'em! Glad to have reawakened a kindred spirit... we just need them to say when they are going top show it now!

You won't regret it, folks...! God, I hope not anyway! I have been "forced" by a landslide of nostalgia to downloaded 2 early Proclaimers songs on iTunes just now, and am now dancing round house and bawling them out loudly!! Oh my, it was SUCH a part of my youth - age 16-19 sort of thing...it wasn't even that I was a total fan...just it was like the soundtrack to that bit of my life - one of the soundtracks anyway! Cant forget about The Smiths, The Pogues, The Cure, The Waterboys...!
