'ConVerse': informal poetry reading and discussion group

The first of Oxford Arts Group's monthly poetry reading and discussion evenings:

Four readers choose a poet, provide a brief introduction, and read one or two favourite pieces. There follows a discussion of both poet and their work, either collectively or in small groups. And then we all politely agree to disagree, or the opposite.

20-25 minutes will be dedicated to each poet, with a break for refreshments at the mid-way point.

Hopefully, the events will provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the form and encourage further exploration of the poets featured. The Albion Beatnik should be an excellent place to start

Notification of poems will be given in advance in order to give opportunities to seek out work and buy or print copies. If this proves difficult, we'll ask for a cover charge of £1 for photocopies made by our readers.

We'll vary the days on which events are held to accommodate as many people as possible.

First event:

Ben Clark reads Pablo Neruda

Hanne Busck Nielsen reads Tomas Tranströmer

Sophie Trinder reads Jack Gilbert

Christine Koutelieri reads Christina Rossetti

A really good evening in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. I learnt a lot and went home wanting to read more poetry. Thanks to those who presented & read so well.

A delight from start to finish. ALL of our readers were so knowledgeable and impassioned and helped immeasurably in building a connection between audience and poetry. A lovely relaxed and intimate event which stimulated the appetite for more of the poets' work, and for further such evenings.

Absolutely agree. There was just the right number of people and the poetry immensely moving. Can'd do 7th, but look forward to more. Jx

I enjoyed it a lot. A varied selection of poets, each worth engaging with--and the speakers clearly all loved their subjects. Friendly atmosphere.

Ah yes, you''re right, I did, but it was a bank holiday Monday.... The problem is work, it does tend to eat into one's day and ruin the social life!

Am I mistaken in recalling your presence at one of George Chopping's Jamborees, commonly held on....ah yes, a 'Monday'?

I would loved to come to this but unfortunately can't get up to Oxford during the week.... Maybe I need to re-locate, I'm missing too much good stuff!

    • Neil

Fiona, I heartily agree! Get your property on the market. However, there will be a weekend event later on. In fact, if the events take off, we may well run twice- monthly sessions, with a weekday evening and a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Hi Neil, thanks for your cheerie message. Look forward to seeing everyone in October. November reading is OK with me - but away on 25th and after. CU at the AB in October. 3 or 4 poems - good point? Would that perhaps depend on the length and type of poem and what sparks the most enthusiasm?!!

    September 23, 2013

    • Neil

I think it was the number of poets, rather than poems, which Katrina was querying. There's a limit of two poems per poet (for the present at least).

      September 23, 2013

  • Katrina R.

Think three poets might be enough rather than four?

    September 23, 2013

    • Neil

We'll test our tolerance this time round, and adjust if necessary thereafter.
